Default Evap Charcoal Canister

Hey everyone, I did a search on this and i Hadn't found any answers.

For the Evap Charcoal Canister, which is the black can that sits at the back of the driver side near the gas tank, there's three hose connections: Tank Tube, air tube, purge tube.

Seen here... http://shbox.com/1/evap_system.jpg

I took my 1997 trans am in a week ago to get the fuel pump repaired, and noticed that the tank tube and purge tube were connected, but the air tube was not running towards anything it was just "there". Now is that suppose to be connected to anything specific or is it just there to suck air in? I'm not particularly sure and was wondering if anyone had some insight into this.

Thanks!

I was wondering that same question a couple weeks ago when i finally got my tank back in. (it's been a few years in the process and couldn't remember) I think it's just what it says, a fresh air inlet.. and as you said it..is just "there". Anyone know for sure?

Just has to have a way to take fresh air in, so it can just hang out so long as it is unobstructed.

Yup, just a fresh air intake. Leave it be.

Ok sounds good, the weird part was that there was a screw in the tube blocking it from taking in air, would that throw a pending code?

I got a question to add to that. If everything is unplugged at the canister, what about the solenoid on the intake? Can it be unhooked and the port on the intake blocked off or will this throw a code?

You can unhook and remove all of it. It will throw a code but it wont make the car run any different

What about if I leave it hooked up, but unhooking it from the intake? Can it be tuned out if I unplug it?

So weird thing happened, before I had the code pending p0441 in my system and after I pulled the bolt out that was plugging the fresh air tube for the canister I reset the system. That code nevet came back, but I had one code pending again but it was p0410, then eventually now the ses is on and im just reading a code p0420. Im thinking its cats or o2 sensors but the cats are fairly new. There is a gas smell around the engine bay as well. Any ideas?

Last year, the fuel pump on my '96 Z-28 was getting noisy, so I thought it was time for replacement. I heard the horror stories of having to completely drop the rear axle to get the tank out, but thought I'd give it a shot at home anyway. Bottom line, I wasn't able to get the car up high enough to easily get the axle out. Plus, I got a little tired of continuing to unbolt stuff while crawling around under the car, without gaining access to get the tank out.

Long story short, I sent it out to a shop I knew, but since I got the car back, I notice that I no longer get that "vacuum whoosh" when I remove the gas cap. I'm assuming something didn't get hooked back up correctly, but I don't have the ambition to pull it apart. The car does run OK, however, and I'm not getting the SES light....

(YES, I've read about cutting a hole in the rear floor, in order to access the pump from the top, but I was NOT going to cut up a pristeen car....)
