Default T400 occasionally losing pull?

I have a T400 behind a an old BBC 454 in a 76 pickup. I just rebuilt the engine and really only checked the fluid level in teh trans before driving it occasionally. There is a definite leak in the trans and I will be changing the filter and checking for the leak soon.
But for the time being, I will sometimes lose pull in what seems to be 3rd gear. The truck will pull fine up to about 40mph, and then all I hear is the engine revving. If I floor the pedal, it starts pulling again, but won't upshift no matter how high the engine revs or how much gas I do or don't give it. This problem doesn't happen all the time, and it happens with full transmission fluid.
Could this only be a filter problem, or am I looking at much much more?
