Default How to tell if the egr solenoid is good?

I have a dash light on and the code comes back as an egr problem. Upon removing the solenoid I inspect it and start depressing the valve and find it will sometimes stick. To me it feels like there is a magnet inside holding it down. Before I drop the cash on a new one I would like to know if it is common for them to stick. No, I do not want to delete it.

GM has been using that style of electronic EGR valve on cars since late 80's early 90's. I have replaced far more than I could count for sticking. It's pretty common and will cause the check engine light.
