Default 1991 Nissan 240sx – T76 LQ4 with T56

I’ve been lurking on here for a while and have made enough progress to justify starting a build thread. This is roughly 2 years of work, but married life and going back to school for a 2nd degree really cuts down on time to work on the car.

Just a little background, I bought this car after graduating high school in 1997. In 1999, I swapped in a 2.0L turbo SR20DET and enjoyed that for several years. But, during this time, I ended up going through several motors and 4 different turbo setups, enough was enough.

Here’s a bit of the build list:
2001 LQ4
317 heads with mild port polish
Patriot dual valve springs
Callies Compstar H beam rods
Wiseco pistons
Brute Speed Blower cam
Masterpower T76 Q trim turbo
JGS 40mm wastegate
JGS 50mm BOV
And much more

This is the car. I want to start off by apologizing for the picture quality. Lighting in my garage sucks and I don’t have a real steady hand apparently.

And the previous setup. T67 SR20DET

Here’s the motor when I picked it up. Dirty, but I’m tearing down for a build anyway.

Here’s the test fit. I was going to try and use the truck manifolds, but I just didn’t like the clearance issues I was going to have.

So I decided to build my own headers. While waiting for piping and flanges to show up I focused on a few other things. I cut out the hatch floor area and made a new flat floor to make room for a new 16 gallon fuel cell. I also added a polished fuel door for access to fill the cell.

All the piping and flanges finally showed and it was time for me to start working on the headers, crossover, downpipe and exhaust.

Wastegate placement and the beginning of the downpipe:

Then it was on to the exhaust, all 3” except for where it splits to a homemade 2.5” y pipe that mates to the rear half of my catback. I really love the look and clearance of this catback so I wanted to make sure I could still use it.

I can’t weld aluminum yet, so I had a friend take care of the intercooler piping along with the BOV flange and AIT bung. I also mocked up the air filter. I may add a 90* to angle it more towards the bumper. I’ll wait and see.

That’s about where it stands right now. I have a few more things to finish up in the engine bay fabrication wise before I pull everything out, clean it, and prep the entire for bodywork and paint.

I’ll post more as things progress.

sorry for the 2 month lull in updates. I've had a few little nuances that have slowed my progress. I made a couple mounts for a powersteering cooler behind the intercooler.

I was able to finish a 4 point rollbar out of an S&W Racecars 8 point setup.

I made a dump/down turn for my cutout. I'm still waiting on my E cut out.

I also got the majority of my fuel system (no injectors yet). Professional Products rails, Bosch 044 pump, Trick Flow 10 and 100 micron filters, Aeromotive 13101 FPR, -8 feed and -6 return.

FPR mounted on the firewall, and notched the pinch weld at the firewall.

i primarily have the pump and pre-filter tucker up behind the passenger rear tire. I'm going to add/build a shield to help protect it.

you think? i've heard from multiple sources that they are good to around 700whp when given full 14 volts. i'm only looking for 600whp (for now atleast). for as light as this car is anything more will be undriveable.

That fuel pump will be fine to 700/750, ditch the prefilter if there is one, the pump has an internal one. It's worth 50ish more hp with out it.

I've personally had one fail, (fuse blew!) and it fueled the car to 850, but pressure dropped significantly.

Great work! I work on some local ls drift cars

Nice build! Similar to mine. However, mine is in a z31 300zx. But its an LQ4 with a Borg Warner S375 and powerglide.

I too tried to stick with the import engines and make big power for a long time. After I kept spinning rod bearings in my VG30ET and only getting it to a 10.3 in the 1/4, I too was done. Decided to run the big displacement engine (that took up the same space LOL) and go after bigger horsepower.

Keep your rear subframe and R200 too. There is a z31 guy who swapped in an S13 subframe and rear diff and put over 700whp through it with multiple passes and it is holding up just fine. Lots of guys think they cant hold power, so they swap it out for a live axle, but it can hold a good amount of power.
