Default Fluid and gasket?

I had a 3:73 put in last fall and the diff gasket is now leaking. The shop that did the work say's they apply sealant and let it set up overnight, no gasket? If that's the case then I am hesitant to do the same. They also used the GM non-synthetic and additive which to me makes sense. So now that I have to open it up to repair the leak, I am wondering what others do for gasket and lube in theirs? Let me know what has worked for you, please and thanks, Les...
