Military Hotrod Club - Need advice

I'm thinking about going active duty, and trying to decide on an MOS to go to. I'd like one that will pay well on the civilian side. I might go officer in a couple of years, so I'd like to take that into account as well. I'm thinking either 35f or 25n. I have a 146 gt and a 142 st. Currently I'm an e4 92g (food service) in the National Guard.
Well I'm AF and I work on jet's so I can't really help you out with those MOS's or the Guard at all really... but I can't voice my opinion on jobs!
I'd suggest something technical. As you already know, killing people or shooting guns doesn't really have a place in the civilian world (except for police officers etc.). I'm not saying their job isn't important, but it sounds like you want something besides an 'aggressive' field. Technical like electrician, engine mechanic, computer mechanic, etc. will all transfer well. But anytime you can get a military supervisor position, you can't & won't go wrong!

I'm in the air force, and my afsc is 3d1x2. The closest mos to me would be a 25F. I know contractors that deploy doing what I do can make $15-$20k a month, which I consider good money. Not sure of the asvab scores required for it though

wait, you got a 146 GT score and you picked Food Service?

Yes, it wasn't the smartest thing I've ever done. I scored in the 99th percentile overall. And didn't get a bonus, so transferring shouldn't be too difficult.

Good luck man... put your knowledge to work. Get money for more LS1 parts :D

That's the plan haha I'll talk to an active duty recruiter on Monday. Since 35f is really understaffed it shouldn't be too difficult to get that with my ASVAB results. Any 35f around here?

All that bragging about a high GT score and being in the 99th percentile.....and you picked to be a cook, AND you didn't get a bonus!?!? Sounds like those smarts are doing a lot of good things for ya! lol

They certainly didn't lol but common sense and intelligence don't always go hand in hand.

I was going to suggest 89D

maybe not, haha.

Eh, not sure how well 89d will translate into a well-paying civilian career. I have no doubt that it would be a blast to do that, though.

I can tell you it translates a whole hell of a lot better than food service. You'd have a decent clearance(that alone opens a good amount of doors) and a high demand skill set, if you like to travel there are lots of range clearance opportunities as well.
You should consider going aviation. There are a plenty of mos's that will translate over to civilian side and with your scores it shouldn't be to hard to get a flight packet/ocs packet in to transition later on down the road.

i was/am a 15J... OH-58D kiowa warrior electronics, avionics, and weapon systems repairer... and the civilian pay for that job is fairly decent on the outside. the air frame is based off of the Bell 206 Jet Ranger, which is the most heavily produced helicopter in the world.... so a civilian job with that MOS will always be there.
I got voluntold to go be a 15E, which is a Unmanned Aircraft Systems Repairer. When you go through the school, they give you an automatic 40 credit hours of college and if you have your core classes done, you can get an automatic AAS in UAV Tech. The bonus for E4 is crazy too.. last time i checked it was a TIER 8 job... maybe TIER 10 now... so a 6 year contract would net you somewhere like $30-40k. With the high demand for UAS in the world now, its a safe job to go into looking at the future side of employment, and you will make an easy 6 figures in the civilian world.
If you want to fly the UAV's then 15W is the way to go, same situation as the above... hope this will help you out and feel free to PM me your number and I can talk with you about some of this stuff

Signal isn't too bad, I'm a 25B(IT Specialist) and I basically sit around waiting for someone to break their computer, printer, whatever. Unfortunately we are very over trained for the amount of work we actually get to do, civilians are contracted to do our job as well and they handle the more in-depth stuff. It's frustrating that I'm limited to what I can do, but it's an easy job so I can't complain. It makes me nervous about how I'll transition to an IT job in the civilian world though ...if you go this route you'll definitely get the training, but not so much real world experience.

Well, apparently the recruiter is only taking 18x from the Guard. I'm not really interested in that, so I guess I'll see what I can do with the Guard for now.

A lot of the MOS's right now are way overstrength. It's going to be hard for a while to go anywhere or move up in the army.

I find it hard to believe that every single MOS is full except Special Forces. The last Army Times had the cutoff scores, and 35f was 39. Seriously understaffed. I'll figure something out. The 15w really caught my eye, but idk if they watch vision, I'm 20/500 and 20/300 uncorrected.

You'll make the perfect officer, lol. Or maybe not, since you already know that they don't go hand in hand....hmmm.....

Lol, hopefully it'll give me an edge over the other junior officers :P
I spoke with another recruiter, and they said the policy memos that tell them what they can and can't hire "prior service" soldiers for come out every couple of weeks, and to just keep calling back, unless I want to go 18x. So, that's the plan. If I keep waiting all the way til next year, then I'll try to set up to go to ROTC and go active that way.

If you can wait until October 1st, you'll be good to go. That's when all the new numbers come out for recruiters.

Oh ok that'll be great. The orders I'm on right now may expire September 30 or may get extended, so we'll see...

Yea, they tend to sing a different tune at the start of the new fiscal year. Ask him if you'll have better luck come October 1st.

I spoke with an Air Force recruiter over the phone. The prior service program opens up on October 1st, and he said he would gladly help me submit a packet next week so that it'll be in when the program becomes available. Significantly more friendly and helpful than the Army recruiters I spoke with were.

If I go with the Air Force, how is technical training for prior service? I remember for Army AIT, the soldiers who were coming from another MOS had off-post housing, and could drive around. Are there any differences between how I'll be treated and how the kids fresh from basic are treated?
Also, I know the recruiter will probably answer this when I talk to him in a few days, but I'm impatient :P Will I retain my current pay grade (E-4) and will my TIS still count?

Your recruiter will fill you in on the rank. Prior service is treated as prior service, you won't be around the basic airmen except in training. The housing situation varies based on the tech school.

He can be as friendly as he wants, the Air Force only allowed 29 prior service guys in 2007, and that was back when they actually needed people, lol. You have to make yourself pretty appealing to get picked up for that. Keep in mind, no recruiter get's "points" for you, since you're prior service. Hence the reason they don't spend a lot of time with you and you have to do the leg work to get switched over.

If you can get it, 15W or E would pay very well and be in high demand in the civilian world. I'm down at Huachuca now going through the Whiskey course. The MOS-T or MOS-Q which ever you want to call them, live in a separate barracks if they're single or off-post if you're married. You can drive and have all the privileges IET soldiers work their ass off for lol. From what the Echoes have said, they're course is pretty easy.

i'd love to, but i'm waiting for the end of the fiscal year...they won't take me unless i do special forces right now...
