Default Budget 408 Build

Have in Mind to build a 408 for my 99 SS....I am New to the LS1 game so please bare with me..
I would like to build a 500 + 408 weekend car,on the shortblock just want to go Forged pistons and some H-beam rods...Can I use the stock crank??? Can you all give some ideas on Heads an cam too... Thanks For the Help Guys...( Not a Race Car)

Kind of depends on the block you are using for your build. Since you want to do a 408 you wont get there with an LS1 block unless you re-sleeve it (which isnt typically budget friendly). Chances are you are looking at stroking a 6.0 block, which means you would be needing a stroker crank. What are your thoughts for the block you will be using? You could do a 402 (4" bore, 4" stroke) stroker with an iron block 6.0 I suppose, which is a popular build these days.

I guess regardless I will need to buy a Stroker Kit?? 408 or 402 ??? I kinda new that I had to find a 6.0 block...If you can guide me to a site where i can get the right advice..

TSP is where Ill be buying my rotating assembly next month, Matt and the guys there have been great. I was able to watch Craigslist and found a new bare block lq4 for $550 that was local. Usually new Lq4/9 blocks are running between $650 and $800 now a days. There are also used/junk yard 6.0 blocks out there, if you do that - just be picky. Make sure to measure the bores and look for any signs of abnormal wear/cracks, etc...

Real good deal... Thanks for the info....I'm going to build the shortblock first and slowly do my reseach on the Heads and Cam...

If your trying to save some money you can run your stock heads for now and buy a great set later....stock heads will hold you back some, but they will work

Some 243 LS2/LS6 heads would likely be well worth if you want to grow into the build and do heads/cam later. Most ported and polished 243s will flow around 05-320 cfm at .600 lift, so bear that in mind with your cam choices. However with the LS6 heads and LS1 intake you will still be leaving quite a bit of power on the table. Also bare in mind your static compression ratio when you build out rotating assemblies. I think Matt @ TSP and I figured I would be running 11.2:1 compression ratio with 63.5 cc heads (-0.012 milled deck) and -8cc dished pistons. That is with a .040 head gasket.
