i have a friend with a stock a4 gto that is wanting to do some mods but is unsure oh what kind to do first. he wants it to sound mean thats for sure. what are some worth while first mods he should do? hes on a bit of a budget for now if that helps any id say about 600s for now.

First of all if he just goes for a "meaner" sound IMHO that's just being a poser. Get the HP cranked up and the sound will follow plus a cat back on a stockish car is a waste of money. The best bang for the buck mod for power (and sound) is a set of long tube headers. A tune would be nice after that.

They all perform reasonably close enough IF you get coated ones. The reason for coating (especially on the inside is not for appearance or protection but to help keep heat in them which helps performance. Coated Pacsetters are within his budget but are mild steel. Depending on how long he keeps the car and driving conditions they can last a while. SS is preferable but coated ones like that are in the $1,000 range.

however. my friend had flowmaster MUFFLERS on hIs GTO and it sounded excellent.

LT's and a tune, what ive learned in the six months of having a gto are the parts arent as easy to find as a fbody or silverado and cost a bit more.

Well on that budget Id say spintech mufflers, magnaflow xpipe and a vararam cold air intake. Youll get the meaner sound hes looking for and a little power too.

Headers will really wake it up as others said but I would wait to get longtubes till you can atleast get good coated ones which is gonna be 500 and youll need a tune. Which puts you well over 600.

Best bet would be to start out with kooks long tube headers and spin tech exhaust then go from there. If he plans on going forced induction with a blower of some sort later down the road make sure and get 3" exhaust from the start.

GTO and budget dont go together. If you dont have the money save up and dont rush it. You'll thank yourself later for doing it right the first time.
