Question Are these both C4 Transmissions?

I realize this is mainly for GM products but I had a question about these transmissions.

These both have the number RF-C4-AR TA105-A stamped onto the front of the tranny. They both have different bell housings. One was off a straight 6 200 engine from a 67 mustang. The other is off a 68 Mustang that had a 289.

The tranny on the right has a 4 on the top? Does that 4 mean C4? I put C4 next to the one I was told was a C4.

Are these both C4 transmissions??

Yes those appear to be C4's. They may be C5's though.

Google the part numbers and you'll find a wealth of information.

One of the transmisisons has a 4 on the top. The other has nothing on the top. I googled the part number and did not find a wealth of info.

Both are C-4's, but use different bell housings, torque converters and flex plates. Built many of those years ago.

Thanks for the reply. What does the "4" represent on top of one of the transmissions?

Not being a Ford enthusiast over the years I had to do some research on a nasty C4 I built for a long time client back in the spring. I was able to find a wealth of information by typing in the part number of certain parts... I guess i was wrong in suggesting the number you provided would work.

However, I did find this resource that will help you out. http://www.mustangcentral.net/tech/c4.html

Specifically what is it that you're trying to accomplish? I've built many C4's and C5's over the years and might just have a solution for you....

We removed the straight 6 200 a couple years ago. I want to get this tranny, flywheel, torque converter, and starter onto this engine. (This tranny is from a 68 Mustang that had a 289)

I just want to get one of these transmissions onto the 74 302 V8 that I purchased. Then put it into our 67 Mustang to at least get it mocked up and started.

The flywheel on the 74 302 is too big so I am going to try an use the flywheel, torque converter, and tranny out of the 68 Mustang that had a 289.

I bought a starter last night for a 68 Mustang. I am going to attempt to bolt this stuff up tomorrow Thursday the 18th.

Some of the parts can be swapped between a c4 and a c5 unit. However if the intermediate band adjustment screw(the front one closest to the pump) is a course thread then the case is a true C4. If it is a fine thread then it is a C5. From the years you have listed they should both be C4 units unless someone has swapped the transmissions in these vehicles. HTH Vince

Those are both early C-4 units , vents being in the case . Later C-4s moved to the extension housings . Yes the C-5s had a fine thread front band adjustmens thread and a deeper bell housing !
