Default symptoms of bent axle?

Ok - my right rear wheel is woobling and the car sounds like it has a few loose marbles on the right rear wheel only at speeds over 55mph.

The wheels/tires have been checked (swapped) and they track true.

I removed the rear brake hub and there seems to be a normal amount of play in the axle.

Could this be a bad bearing or bad axle or both?

Thx...

If you hit something, say a curb or huge pothole hard enough to bend an axle then most likely you would also have a warped rim. Spin the axle without the brake assembly on and you may able to tell if its bent. When you refer to "play" in the axle do you mean up and down, or pushing the axle in and out? You should have virtually no play side to side/up and down.

...replaced the brake hub recently with no change.... both rear wheels/tires were spun on a balancer and traced/balanced true.

The play in the axle assembly is "in and out," not "up and down." ...probably less than the width of a dime.

I suppose I should get out the dial indicator.

Thx.

Thats normal in and out. Just the space between the axle and pinion shaft in the carrier.

A bent axle, if it's bent near the hub anyway, will give
you a side-side runout as the wheel rotates. Put a pencil
on a cinder block next to the wheel rim and give it a spin
looking at how much clearance varies. Shade tree dial
indicator, like.
