Default Can i get 3.42's for my 98-02 a4

I know i put up some stupid threads up a little while back that i could have just searched. Sorry. But this question i searched and didnt find. I want 3.42 gears for my a4 with stock 2.73's. And i was shopping for them and a set said you need series 3 carrier and i wont work for series 2 carrier. Do i have series 3 or series 2. And what is this??

why not just go 3.73's? and you should post this in the gears and axles section to get better results.

Easy on the newbie, we can move the thread.

OP, you need a 2 series 3.42. However, all stock 3.42s are 3 series. So, your solution is to buy a Motive thick gear 2 series 3.42. They make them because i installed one in a ten bolt just a couple months ago. Jaws gear likely sells one, and I know Summit/Jegs should too.

Does the series 3 give you a bigger jump or something? And is there anything else i need to buy before getting them installed?

I would recommend NOT using a ring gear spacer. Though it will technically work, I'd prefer to not add anything into the mix that could further increase tolerance like run-out.

Buying another 3 series posi and using a stock 3 series 3.42 is a viable option as well.

The posi is what is 2 series or 3 series. If you replaced it with one or the other then you could run the corresponding gear to match the posi. As far as installation I would buy a full rebuild kit if it was me. Fresh bearings help these over-powered rear ends last longer IMO.

A 2 series uses a larger diameter pinion gear than a 3 series. The carrier is offset the difference in 1/2 the diameter of the pinion gear.

"Does the series 3 give you a bigger jump or something?"

A 2series carrier with a 3.42 'thick' gear set performs(power/torque/acceleration) the same as a 3series carrier with an OEM 3.42 'standard/regular thickness' gearset.
