Cadillac CTS-V - 120 mph run and pieces started flying off the V!!! LOL

I've ran the V up to 166 in the past, but a couple days ago I made a 130+ or so run and the piece of plastic under the front that goes between the bumper and the front frame....Splash guard??...Came off....It was flopping so that I thought I had a tire going down. I had to pull over and rip it loose on the side of the road. So I bought the correct clips and put it all back on "the right way" LOL and honestly never thought of it again. Well today on the way back from a road trip to Knoxville, Tn I made a pull to around 120 against a SRT8 Charger and the splash guard and the inner fender both came off and flew about 1,000' behind me. Now I have to buy new parts but I was wondering if any of you have had your cars just blow apart??

I lost the Splash guard on my Dodge Magnum SRT8 and I was going about 80mph on the freeway. Cost about $300 from Dodge Dealer.

Yeah the couple of days that I drove without the splash guard I could honestly tell a difference in the stability and wind noise from the car at 80+. Now I know that it's gone and it looks like SHIT with the inner fender missing as well.

I've pushed my 06 right up to 150 maybe 8-10 times and always enjoyed the sound of quiet. Seriously-not even any wind noise. I do have exceptionally low mileage though...

Well I was used to the SUPER quiet as well. Once something that's supposed to be there is banging off the ground and against the car that sure changes in a hurry...LOL... Mine does have 117k on it, but until about 3 weeks ago she was tight and quiet. Still SUPER quiet in the cabin....I don't wanna get too crazy now until I get the pieces replaced due to the way that the air flow has changed.

These Caddys spent a lot of time in wind tunnels during their design phase, I'm sure. So it becomes impossible to know what will happen when large exterior pieces are no longer present. My friend's 05 became harshly loud when a small piece of the sunroof broke. We compared and found the 06 'roof to be slightly different in design. I have kind of a spring loaded piece in the front, with the roof retracted that his doesn't have.

My dads 06 c6 had the plastic top separate from the roof when he was going 110+ mph. Didnt even go back for it. Took it back to the dealer and they installed a glass roof for him lol. I can Just imagine how scared shitless I'd be if stuff started flying off my car

I'm pretty sure every car is susceptible to this... who knows maybe it's factored in by the manufacturer because they know for a fact people are gonna drive this car hard at times ... gotta make that extra $$ LOL

Perhaps it's a sign to keep it down to reasonable speeds :D he he...
That sucks though having to replace those pieces and the way they put all that plastic together is neat when it's new, but seems like something to check from time to time...

Yep.....I KNOW that the pieces were put back in the right order....BUT there was something that caused the splash guard to come off the first time. I checked it "good" when I had it up replacing all the clips. You can GUARANTEE next time it will be put back with clips and zip ties LOL.....The sunroof story reminds me of my uncle's 90s Vette with the targa style top. He let me take it to prom 11th grade and of course I ran it up to 130 or so and apparently the latches weren't closed the right way....Well let's just say when that HUGE ASS piece of fiberglass flies out you'll think that you're coming out of the seat and going with it.....I had to work all summer to replace it. And NEVER got to borrow the Vette again :(

Where did you buy your nylon pop rivets? I bought some from autozone but they weren't the EXACT size I needed but still worked.

Yeah I checked O'Reilly's and they weren't an exact match...I was scared of what happened happening so I got a friend whose sister works at a GM dealership to bring me some OEM ones home....Last time I try and do something the right way!

Now you KNOW you're driving a genuine General Motors product when shit starts falling off lol ;)
I let my x girlfriend take my Miata up to Tampa one day. Her and her mom "latched" the top befor she left to come back home... needless to say, I no longer had a good top when she arrived back here.

Maybe this was cadillac's way of providing free weight reduction without being held liable.

Always embarrassing to have shit fall off the car when racing somebody. Mine came off doing about 70 one day and it's been sitting in the garage since then. Haven't noticed a difference. I thought it was just to keep water off the motor. Mine is rarely ever driven in the rain.

It's a GM product. Imagine the absolute crap they would still be making if Bob Lutz hadn't pulled GM's executives heads out of their collective asses. Those arrogant MBA wiseguys did a remarkable job of driving a once thriving auto manufacturer right into the toilet, and the arms of the federal government.

I made a thread about this not too long ago. A friend's V did this at about 120. I haven't broken 100 in my V (thanks Atlanta traffic) and I'm prayin it doesn't ever happen to mine.

You guys all need to look on the bright side...
A friend of mine bought a "new to him" Subaru WRX and had it for about 2 weeks. he came down one Tuesday night for my car meet, and on the way back home he decided to "top it out" on the interstate. Previous owner was ANAL about maintainance and taking care of the car. Had 40k miles on it...
He ended up starving the motor of oil, and spun a rod bearing... Apparently they have a problem with oil not draining back out of the head quick enough... he found out the hard way.
At least we can top it out and only have a few things fall off and still do it again a week later! ;)

i dunno their have been a handful of engine/diff failures that people have suffered, which for a low production number vehicle it isnt good to hear.
I dont know how you guys can get up to 130 and it be quiet, my sunroof/roof makes such a wild wind noise its unnerving

I did pull 150 for quite some time down the freeway about 4-5 weeks ago. No problems. Stable as ever and felt like I was going 25. I did notice while changing my oil that I was missing push clips on the splash guard behind the front air dam. I believe this was from the previous owner though.

They aren't use to the absolute quietness of a Bimmer at those speeds.

I bought a used 09 V. Got up the next morning and was going to do the muffler delete , so i cut the mufflers off and got ancy so i took it for a ride (so i could hear her).. Then on the way home i rememered they are supposed to go 191mph.. so i went to a straight road near my house and got on her... I remember looking down at 180 at the speedo and looking up for about 2 seconds and out the corner of my eye i see this big black thing flying in the air!!
Turned around and went back, and there it layed, my back bumper.. drove right to gm dealer and bought 650$ in parts... about 5 days later and a nother 265$ for paint it looked like new.
SOOOO dont cut the exhaust off and go on a beat run.. the heat started the foam on fire behind the bumper and with the extra pressure hitting the out sides of the bumper it pushed the sides out and make it like a big kite at 185ish mph..
SOOO the money i tried to save from not buying a cat back i spent on a new rear bumper.
and at 180 it was as smooth as a babys ass.. ;)
