Default 1977 Trans Am

I saw a 1977 Transfer Am today for sale. The guy was asking for $2000 for it. He said it had the original 305 in it. Is this the correct engine for a 1977 Transfer Am?

Not as far as I know. They didn't start using the 305 until 1980 or 81.

According to the Standard Catalog of Firebird by J Gunnell (page 60), the 1977 did NOT have a 305 option. Here are the engine options (for all Firebirds) with the 5th symbol in the VIN indicating the engine the car came with: C = 231 cid 6 cyl, Y = 301 cid Pontiac built 2 bbl, L = 350 cid Chevy 4 bbl. R = 350 cid Olds built 4 bbl, Z = 400 cid Pontiac built 4 bbl, and K = 403 cid Olds built 4 bbl. Hope this helps and now if you look at the car, you can say with authority what engine came in the car.
