Default Dumb question...can you hear your turbo under regular acceleration

This is probably a dumb question, but I was wondering about it earlier and have never ridden in a turbo car before. Can you hear your turbo "whistle" under normal acceleration? From a stop, putting around town, etc? I can hear them on diesel trucks so figured...maybe? I had a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP with the M90 supercharger that you could hear very slightly under regular acceleration.

My turbo is a Turbonetics TC78, for what it's worth.

I've never been able to hear it just cruising down the road but as it nears zero vacuum I can hear it start whistling pretty good. You don't have to be in boost to hear it, as long as the turbo is spinning fairly quickly you'll hear it, like lugging the engine while accelerating or going uphill in overdrive.

I had a t72 on my SBC 383 thing whistled lke crazy with the exhaust cutout open. Now I have an 88mm on my 402 lq9 and its really quiet. I'm kinda upset about it actually. I think its because this Turbo has a huge exhaust wheel and the rpms of the Turbo are much lower than the t72. Its the turbine side that you hear when cruising, when you lay into it you hear the high pitched jet engine sound coming from the compressor. Here's a dyno vid you can hear cruising whistle then boost whistle.

With open cutout I can hear the thing spool up all the time I am accelerating. If I'm going up a slight grade it just sits there and whistles. With my cutout closed going through my slp dual dual you cannot hear the turbo at all unless you really get into it. The precision 76 I run now makes a lot more noise than my TC76 did.

That was going to be my comment. On my old setup it was just an open down pipe. On the new setup it will be two open downpipes

When I am going up a hill in 4th at 45-50mph loading the motor up with the converter locked is the only time I hear mine "whistle". I can also hear it in 3rd when I am slowly accelerating on the on ramp letting the boost slowly come in from vaccum to boost I can hear it then. Once I floor it though I can't hear any turbo, all exhaust then the BOV when I let off. My car the BOV probably doesn't even open when I shift since I am an auto car.

Now at the track on the line when I am footbraking it you sure as hell can hear it, and especially when I go from the footbrake to the transbrake it really starts singing it's whistling melody. Soon as the button releases though and the motor goes over 4000rpm it's only exhaust noise I can hear.

I guess I should add that I have a dynomax bullet in the I-pipe(3") and a dynomax ultra magnum race muffler(1 chamber) 3" inlet 2.5" dual dual otl outlets. I need a cut-out bad. I bet I'd gain close to 50rwhp with a cut-out dumped off my 3.5" downpipe and I bet it would spool super quick.

I'm planning to mate my downpipe up to my "Borlamouth" system (Loudmouth + Borla XR1) so it's not too loud...an electric cutout might be worth doing though.

Do those QTP units seal up pretty well?

The biggest factor will be if the compressor housing is a ported anti surge design or not

Anti surge housings make alot of noise hence why the diesels are all so loud

Talking compressor noise not turbine out the exhaust

Usually yes you will hear it with any decent throttle, like 30-40% and higher. If open DP the TCs are pretty loud through the exhuast.

I wonder why that is?

What size turbine wheel did you T6 76mm have? Was it a BW unit?

How well do the 295's fit? Do they rub lock to lock? I have the same size rear tires and wheels, but I have 17x9.5" in front with 275/40's.
