Default gauge cluster swap

Can't find a way of testing take signal from cluster so does anyone know if I can just swap my cluster into a friends car to see if it works or not, mine is a 99 T/A and his is a 2000T/A, and does it matter if the car has a 6peed or auto

I'm needing to know something about this as well. I need to swap out my cluster for a new/used one but wanted to keep the miles I have and I've heard that the miles isn't stored in the cars computer but rather the cluster itself. Anyone know how to swap the clusters along with the miles? So to high jack the thread but thought this would be useful to know as well as informing me, lol.
