Default Cluster swap

My tach is not working in a 99 T/A so I took a cluster out of my friends 2000 T/A to test if cluster i s the problem and the car only cranks and won't start with loaner cluster but it still starts with the broken one. What do I have to do to let it work with loaner cluster.

The tach doesn't die for no reason. Is there an SES light? Do you know what code has been set?

Sounds like a wiring issue or a computer problem not a cluster problem. Clusters are interchangeable 99-02 and have no effect on the motor running or not.

Cluster has a direct effect on the motor running or not. Try to start your car with the gages fuse pulled. Won't happen.

Didnt know that, guess its not the same in my mustang. I ran it without any cluster wired at all. I then wired up the cluster and nothing changed.

How does the cluster affect the car running though?

Were you running a stock harness? I'm pretty sure if the PCM doesn't get the right signal from the BCM, it will cause a no start condition.

I took the complete harness out of a 99 and did an LS swap on 95, the engine, interior harness and the bcm and cluster are all original to them selves, I have no Idea if the tach was broken I just finished this swap and started car runs fine except for tach so I was swapping cluster to see if that was the problem but then I ran into the no start with the other cluster,

Also I went to an exhaust shop to get some work done on it yesterday and the car would not start when I went to pull in so I opened the hood and shook wires back by cam sensor and then it started the scanner showed a cam sensor code so maybe I do have a problem in the harness by cam sensor, the sensor is brand new from GM so 'm hoping its fine.

Yeah buddy, that's what I was thinking. Without the proper signal from the cam/crank the PCM will guess and either be right or 180 out. So it will start sometimes, and backfire other times. You have a break in the harness somewhere, or a bad cam position sensor, or a worn out magnet on the cam, or the cam bolts came loose from the sprocket and the cam is walking.

Do you have any wiring schematics for harness going to sensor?

I'm getting PO342 low voltage, does it matter if I use the high voltage code info you gave me?

Thanks
