just recently put a heads/cam carbed ls1 in a 88 camaro. Everything seems to be hooked up. It's getting gas, has plenty of fuel pressure, but the coils are getting no power. Pulled the timing cover and checked the timing, reset it just to be on the safe side, and still no fire to the coils what so ever. can anyone be of any assistance w/ this. I was told the crank sensor needs to be replaced. being that the motor is carbed now in a different car my buddy cut his wiring harness from the car the motor came out of.......is the harness of any need with the swap?

You should have a mod move this to the carbed section. You'll have better luck there.

Do the Coils have power from the Fuse Box?

The Bank 1 and Bank 2 Fuses from the Fuse Box power the Coils too..

I assume you are using an MSD ignition box. Sometimes people have trouble getting those to work the first time. Sometimes you need to pull all the plugs and crank it over with a strong battery until the box figures out the crank signal. They usually start working after that.

If that doesn't work try starting it with the lap top connected. the MSD software will tell you if you are getting a crank signal or not.

How old is your ignition box? Some of the early ones needed software updates to help with the low RPM crank signal.

the ignition box is only a few months old, we've spun the motor over time and time again, was back firing, reset the timing to be on the safe side now no fire what so ever

how are you changing the timing by pulling the front cover? These motors fire the ignition by the crank/cam sensor signals. What is your cranking rpm on the msd software?

Yes the timing was reset by removing the t/c and how would I go about setting the cranking rpm

Wow. Never heard of that approach.

You adjust the timing by hooking a computer to the MSD box and adjusting it with their software. Or by swapping out the numbered pills.

woah...you don't change the timing by the timing chain....wow.


That should be installed straight up for most builds, dot to dot with no advance or retard on the timing chain. THEN you use the MSD software to dial in your timing curve or use those plastic pills in the side of the box. You need to open the software on your laptop while hooked to the msd box and the ignition on to see cranking rpm on the tach on the screen of the laptop.
