Default Want to stop fighting my ABS...any ideas?

Since Ive had my staggered Zr1s 9.5 in the front and 11 in the back, the abs fights me at hard high speed stops. It will stop ok if you realize you have to fight back when the pedal starts pulsating. The first couple of times it happened it scared me to the point where I didnt think I would be able to stop in time, since then when im concious of it I will put a lot more braking pressure and it stops fine. Is there any way to fix or make this better without deleting the abs or getting non staggered wheels? I like having ABS and 11s out back. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Umm, that's how ABS work. It tries not to lock your wheels and slide onto an object.

Yeah I get that....I probably should have been more clear. It will hit the abs if Im going lets say 80mph and I step on the brakes hard, not panic hard, but hard even if Im only slowing down a little and it will fight me and it cuts down on braking time. The wheels arent slipping and theres no reason it should kick in at that point. It was fine before I put staggered wheels on it.

unplug that SOB an take the light out. muscle cars dont need ABS!

haha jk, that is a option tho but prolly not the best. sounds like you got a wheel speed sensor problem

What size are your tires? Wheel widths should not affect ABS at all, it is the diameter that matters.

I recently installed a set of draglites and slicks in the back with skinnies up front. Had this same issue when coming to a stop at the end of the 1/4mile. Scared the crap outa me to. Slicks are 26x11.5x15.

Would like to find a solution for this as well.

[edit] Well after a quick search it looks as though it is caused by having different diameter tires front to back. The abs sensors need to have all the tires the same diameter for it to work correctly. Aside from deleting this out with tuning i wasn't able to find another solution.[/edit]

Well after more searching it looks as though it can't be tuned out. While we have our different diameter tires on we will have no abs, no way around it.

Tire diameter must be within ~4% front to rear to keep ABS working properly.

Two things:
1. Make sure the front & rear tires are the same diameter
2. Get stickier tires.

Different diameters will trick the ABS.

Hard/Cheap tires don't grip as well.

That's what I was thinking but ever since I Put staggered wheels on that's when I noticed the problem my tires 275/40/17 front and 315/35/17 rear

I'm pretty sure last time I checked I was within 1%

Two different pairs of tires with two different amounts of grip can contribute to the problem.

Those sizes will have no effect on the ABS I ran them for 3 years and many others have as well. As long as the height difference is >1.5" you are fine and width doesn't have any effect with it either.

I have stock zr1s 275 40 17 on mine and have always disliked my abs. Breaking at high speeds especialy around corners the brakes just seem to let go or "fight back" so then I have to really push on that sob. I hate it. I may delete it someday and I bet I wont miss it.

then you need more aggressive pads bc whatever you're using obviously isn't doing very well. Also you should learn to brake hard without getting into ABS. It keeps you from locking up, but doesn't help you stop any faster. If you brake to the threshold of just before ABS, you will stop faster and not have to worry about it

if you are doing "high speed" braking around corners and getting into ABS, you need to stop before you lose control of the car and hurt yourself or others. Watch some racing sometime, and then tell me how often you see guys brake through corners...there's a reason for that

I have hawk hps pads...and it's not that I'm slamming on the brakes at high speeds but if I step on the brakes with moderate pressure at high speeds the abs will fight me back...i think it's a problem with the abs system not my foot

Are you certain your brake rotors are true? Seen this be a large issue with ABS before..
