Exclamation So Is this the "Ticking" time bomb noise or what?

Just bought this car a week ago. 98 TA 146k m6 98 TA. Only thing ive done is change the plugs, wires and oil (5-w30 mobil 1 high mileage synthetic) and I go for a casual cruise into town tonight and pull into gas station and notice a tick coming from the passenger side. Most audible from under the car. Oil pressure and temp are all normal. Car has 35-60 psi depending on rpm. Hasnt made this noise before. Vid below, sry so short but had to be able to upload it. Any opinions? Car is stock with LS6 intake, slp lid and magnaflow catback and a spec clutch.

So is it gonna blow up now or what. Had 4 of these cars, never had a noise like this.

i would pull the valve covers off. check to see if the rockers are tight. also make sure you didn't bend a pushrod. then move on to lifters (fyi you have to pull the heads to replace lifters)

Didnt bend a push rod, car never went over 3k rpm and thats a completly different sound (that one I have heard lol). But yeah I've torn these motors down before really wasnt looking to do that to this one, not right now anyways. Thing is, it dont sound like its coming from the valvetrain as its a lot louder near the bottom of the car then on top of the engine. Im hoping its maybe a bad exhaust gasket somewhere maybe by the manifold collector or something. Wont be able to look at it closer until sunday though.

That sounded a lot like a lifter tick to me. I would always check the exhaust manifold gasket to make sure you don't have a leak, but if you hear the noise more on the bottom of the motor I would lean towards the lifter being an issue.

Yeah i will def examin the exhaust first...if its a lifter is it just gonna tick for a while or what? What usually happens in these situations with these motors, would a thicker oil or something help for now?

Update- started car after work, no ticking. Must only do it when hot. This should rule out anything mechanical and must be a exhaust leak somewhere right? Thoughts?

Mine does the same thing. The collector cracked a little on the driver side exhaust manifold so it tick tick tick's. Drives me nuts but I'm not replacing a longtube for a damn tick!

Update- Took to exhaust shop, no leaks. Upon further investigation I determined it was coming form the #8 cylinder. Used a bar to push on the rear plug/wire and the tick went away. Removed plug wire and loosened and re-tightened plug, re-installed wire and the tick is gone. Conclusion-the plug may have been somewhat loose or the wire came loose. Problem fixed no more ticking what so ever!

I traced the noise to cyl#4 by pulling the wire harness plug at each coil till the noise stopped. I pulled all the plugs on that side of the motor and inspected them ( nothing bad there ) reinstalled them , then verified the wires did in fact snap on tight at both the coil and sparkplug.

Once warmed up the noise ( ticking was back ) , the car runs like a top with NO issues other than noise.
I am glad your ticking timebomb was disarmed

I plan on replacing the heads and cam ,so while everything is apart I plan to replace the lifters too.

Wish me luck ....
