journal or ball bearing Im looking to buy a tc78 for my 383 stroker ls1. I need to decide if I want to add the ball bearing option or just keep the journal bearings. Is the ball bearing option worth the extra money?

Im partial to journal bearings. They are more street friendy. What i mean by that is they tend to last longer then the ball bearing units for daily driving. Thats just been my personal exp. But im sure there are people that have used ball bearing units on the street for a long amount of time without issue. I still went with journal

For a big V8 where you wont be using high boost pressures, and spool time is much less of an issue, the use of ball bearings does become less of a need.
But for a small turbocharged powerful engine using a lot of boost...absolutely go ball bearing. Ive never heard of any reliability issues with quality units.

Don't buy a STD TC 78 for your 383, wait for one of the new ones forced inductions are doing with a bigger exhaust wheel..
I have a TC 78 and had to source a 1.32 ar exhaust housing to get enough flow at the top end, with a .96 ar it would fall over at 5000 rpm, it would drop over 100 hp by 6500 redline.

FYI, Forced Inductions told me Turbonetics is only ball bearing on the COMPRESSOR side. The turbine side is still a journal bearing on there bb units... If you have the time, I would wait around for the new 76mm TURBINE wheels come out. A TC78 with with a 76 turbine will make somewhere around a 100 more hp maxed out over the little 68mm wheel
