I would do one of two hings either take it back apart and recheck to see if its correct or buy a new one . If you take it apart again , put locktite on the outside screws so they wont back out .

make sure the dowel pin is inserted properly. if it is, time to replace the whole thing. get ready to do that job a few times unless you can still purchase the MSD version of the optispark. that was the one thing i hated about my 93 Z28

You replaced it with a new opti then it shouldnt be the opti unless you didnt line up the dowel pin correct on the opti . if it pinging in high rpm sounds like a plug problem . Have you replaced them ?

tep plugs and wires. im thinking the pin went in slightly off and is throwing the time off. trying to find top dead center now. the splined pin is only supposed to go one way but it doesnt seem like is the way it should have went in.

What direction should the metal side of the rotor button face at tdc? Trying to figure out if I could be out of time. The plastic side faces number 1 on the compression stroke.

Got it! Splined pin was slightly off. Putting it back together again. FYI the how to link above is slightly off. Good luck getting that balencer off.
