Default Newb question

This may be a newbie question but this is my first time doing anything that requires removing a transmission. My flexplate has 4 broken teeth and I have to replace it. I know I have to remove the transmission and have most of the process figured out. My one question is when talking about transmissions I see alot of talk about seating a converter. Will I need to do that for this job and if so what will I need to do as I dont want to mess my pump up. The car is a 96 formula
