Hello G8 ers

I plan are trading in my 07 impala SS in next year for a G8 GT. The impala ss i have it loaded with too many issues and my warrenty runs out next year. I do not want to spend money on repairs as the tranny is the number one problem with that car..

So my questions is, how is the G8 holding up? Tranny, motor etc. From what i see in this forum, it seems very well.

Couldn't be happier with my G8. Im pushing almost 58k on it and no serious issues yet. The only repair I have had to make was the passenger side lower control arm.

My only current issues are that the dash and headliner kind of make noise when I go down the road and still dealing with steering wheel shake. I had to fix the pulley squeak myself but the pulley was only 23 dollars from GM.

I have 45K miles on the clock.

I traded my 08 GP GXP for an 09 G8 GT and I LOVE my G8:)
-Steering wheel shakes at 100km/h or so (Normal)
-Had the front LCA replaced 2 months ago (warranty)
-On my third harmonic balancer
car has 46,700kms now and the tranny and engine is holding up great.

Ours is kicking ass and taking names! The wife Daily drives it with 441 hp 3200 stall converter. The ONLY issues we had was the TCM and clutch packs in the trans. had them replaced under warranty and its been pretty smooth sailing since. If your getting one tho the first mod I would do would be the 5th gen wheels and brembo brakes. :)

How would you tell the harmonic balancer needs to be replaced and how much does it cost to buy the part?

Mine has visible runout in it but the engine seems pretty smooth and the car doesn't shake.

I showed the dealer the runout in the balancer within my 36K warranty and they did nothing about it. Several other people have observed that the balancer seems to wobble.

Bought wife a 2009 GT NO MODS except BMR trailing arms bought with 8,000 miles now there is 21,000 miles on the clock. Warranty repairs, Transmission flare/bang updated software. control arms done recently, Broken motor mount recently done, Harmonic Balancer, water pump pulley, steering wheel shake/ vibration. No track time. Store it for the winters. Not daily driven and it has all these GLITCHES. Wife should of taken MY advice and BOUGHT another Grand National (LOL).. Other than that it does put a smile on her face when she beats up on the stock mustangs around here. oh yea it rides nice to.

2yrs...40K miles...
Most of the LEDs in third brake light went out, and what was left were flickering sometimes.

No other problems for my 60 mile a day DD, two to three times a month dragstrip car.

I have a love hate relationship with my G8. lol But the fact that I can whoop any stock vette that pulls up next to me and get that holy shit face makes it all the more worth it. I've only broken an engine and a tensioner pulley so far, and I've had it for about 10K miles.

Mine is having all the same issues others are having. I am dropping her off at the dealer this week to have everything fixed before my bumper to bumper runs out. My windshield is separating on the top and sides. The steering wheel shake is driving me nuts so I am going to have them check out the LCA's. The leather on my steering wheel above the horn is coming undone. The door locks sometimes don't unlock/lock when I press the key fob. I just had the AC compressor replaced and told them to fix the mildew smell coming from the vents. They did something but it still comes back every now and then. Other then that I really enjoy my G8.

I have a slight hint of steering wheel shake occasionally but nothing like is reported on all the forums. No issues whatsoever with my GXP at 18,000 miles.

I'm also offering it for sale if anyone is interested. Bone stock 09.5 with Bluetooth, sunroof and automatic transmission with the duration of the warranty left.. I added clear bra and HSV GTS 20" wheels from Australia with Michelin Pilot tires.

I have one other minor minor issue to report as of recently. The fake leather on my shifter (M6) has separated and is coming off. It is annoying but I ignore it.

I refuse to sell because there isn't another car that better meets my needs at this time. Getting from point A to point B -- this car is so reliable. Gas mileage makes me cry until I open it up and left others in the dust despite my 4000 lb penalty.

Ok so from reading here and the other g8 forums. I have seen these three things as problems.

1. Steering wheel shake
2. Power lock solenoid
3. Front glass issue

So here are my questions to each.

1. I have a small very minimal vibration in my impy ss at about 65-70 mph. It's small and the wheel shakes a little but not that bad when holding it. With the problem with the g8. Is it the same or is it really that bad where your hand getting numb. For example is it livable or is it really bad where you would lose control.

2. I have read about the locks going bad where it doesn't lock or unlock sometimes. I don't find this a huge problem as if I was getting a g8 I wouldbe buying an extended warrenty but who had this?

3. I been reading about the front glass going bad. Is this true as this is a main concern since extended warrenty does not cover glass.

I think the 18-19mpg overall is reasonable for what it is. I'm looking to sell mine to get a different car, not because the G8 is unreliable or poor quality.

I'm in the same boat as steveman0018 in planning on picking up a G8 GT soon and would love to hear more about these issues. Is there really no consistent fix for the steering wheel shake even after installing new control arms? The windshield thing is concerning as well, has this been an issue for anyone after a repair has been done?

Thanks and appreciation in advance for any information!

We've had the wife's car for 2 years and it has 16k on it now. The only real issue we had was a problem early on with the evaporator tube that caused water in the driver's footwell. Happened to my brother's as well - fixed under warranty and done.

I was freaking out about wind noise driving the car to the airport one day ... turned out that a rear door was ajar. Biggest problem we've had so far otherwise, lol.

The car does have some quirks ... the interior materials are strange and smudge really easily and the paint is thin and chips easily. Otherwise, it's been a beautiful, powerful, reliable car for her.

I love mine. I've done the rear cover TSB and need to do the lower control arms. Other than that, no issues. But I've only got 14,000 on it and don't drive it unless its nice out. With the maggie/cam n stuff, I'm not easy on it either :) By far, one of my all time favorite cars. People never expect it to be 500+hp.

I want a G8 with a M6, but don't want to spend 30k on one. Just about to have my truck paid for and my 94 bird has 303k miles, time for a new car but don't want the expensive payments.

Sorry for the highjack. That is a sweet ride. Are you using staggered sized wheels and tires or the same size?? I would like to run the 9.5 Camaro wheels on all 4.

Just so I'm not a total ass. I've only owned mine for 18,000 miles, 38,000 on the car. I love it and have had no mechanical issues. That stupid "Atari" gauge is an issue....

i just wrecked my g8. but.it is repairable. hit a curb head on at 45mph and.broke complete front.suspension, fender and.bumper. also front cradle. no air bags deployed or.glass broken. still starts and sounds amazing. 7500 in damage. car held up great and kept me safe.

68k+ miles and no major issues. It's had two control arms replaced under warranty, and that's about it. I did brakes last summer.

I had transmission issues with mine. It was very Minor, but it rendered the car useless and caused me to be stuck on the side of the road twice. A TPMS sensor also went bad. All covered under warranty of course, but still very annoying. I ended up trading her in at 34,000 miles.

got 70,000 miles and run the HELLLLLLL out of it been off road a good bit took it in and out my pasture to get stuff or just to play the radio while i worked out there on my land. plus my inlaws driveway is more suited for a 4 wheeler. Its just as solid as the day i bought it only mech issues were 3 bad pullys they all went out after i did a 0-165mph pull so i'm guessing they didn't like the rpm for that long a period. and lifter failure but all was under warrenty i'm sure they will fail again so i'm gonna dod delete them asap

Didn't read through everyone else's posts, but I know someone that had one and I drove it a few times. GM bought it back under the lemon law; under warranty they put on a few tires, had the drive shaft aligned, new motor mounts... then GM said the steering wheel is supposed to shake, and wouldn't attempt to fix it anymore.

It was a fun quick car though.

I have no steering wheel shake, unless the road is uneven. If it's not the tires/wheels out of balance, replacing the strut mounts, front control arms and radius rods, should eliminate any wobble IMO.

My windshield is also splitting at the top (not too bad tho). I'm hoping enough people complain about it, so GM will cover replacement when I take my car in at 90k for this item alone.

Not 1 issue except for battery.

Same here. Just replaced mine last week. 2 years, w/ 42K miles on the clock, and the battery goes flat? Huh? $210 at Autozone, btw.

Other than that, lower control arms were replaced under warranty. I've got a lifter tick that may also result in a trip to the dealer. I'll wait until January, when it's really obvious.

Tires are shot, but that's to be expected. I have a "spirited" driving style and the car sees it's fair share of high-rate acceleration. So, no complaints there. I'll buy Continental DWS's at Tirerack within the next couple of weeks.

My radio has begun automatically switching to Front Aux all by itself with nothing plugged into the port. The weather has gotten cooler here in Canada the last couple of weeks, I think its temperature related, and Im going to park the car soon for the winter. See what its like next summer when I put on some major miles to go on Power Tour.

Why would you ever put that giant oversized RV battery back in there?
