Default stripped converter holes

bought a 10,000 mile tci 3600 stall converter for 300 bucks. The torque converter holes were stripped. Can they be fixed? How can i tell if this converter will even work when installed. Can I Helicoil them? If someone could text or call me thatd be great

I would give TCI a call, it's possible they can attach new mounting pads, I don't know if I would trust a re-thread, or helicoil. As far as functionality of the converter itself, you took a crap shoot buying a used one their is really no way to see what went on inside with out cutting it open, but TCI can also tell you its specs, when it was made and sold if there are serial # on it. Do not heli coil the pads. They carry too much of a load for them to not be bolted solid. The best bet is to drill them over sized and then have them retapped. The flexplate bolt holes would need to be drilled as well.

If that's not feasible, then call TCI and ask them. Most likely the torque converter fron cover will need to be replaced, it would be less expensive than milling the old pads off and welding new ones on... which by the way I've never seen done on any converter. This falls under you get what you pay for. You might give Chris at Circle D a call and see what his recommendation would be.

The cover will have to be replaced which generally is the most expensive part of the vertor. I made the mistake of running a convertor with some bad threads they were rolled. The bolts pulled out under stress and made a mess. I don't think there is enough metal to make the holes bigger. If the threads are messed up i would start to think about the rest of the convertor being bad.
