Default Ls1 / 700r4 questions

Do I need anything other than this:

http://www.speedwaymotors.com/LS1-En...DisplayId=5070

to mate my 5.3 to my 700r4?

Also what junkyard parts or stuff can I buy to make the converter lock up? It's a 1992 Caprice transmission. I'm also going to be buying speed parts for the tranny, so if there's a kit that includes such a device, that would be a consideration. Let me know what you have had good or bad luck with.

Thanks

You don't even need a $230 flywheel, a $50 GM one with a spacer will work with just the elongating of the holes.
My tv made ez works pretty well. Would a vacuum switch not work for the lock up?

B&M makes the best lockup kit. It's speed controlled and adjustable. You're going to need some way to hook up the TV cable. If you don't hook it up, you'll have to have a manual valve body. The TV Made EZ kit will work on the throttle bodie that have the small side plate, but it won't bolt up to any other throttle bodies unless Bowtie Overdrives has made changes to the design recently.

Be careful! You can destroy that tranny in a hurry if it's not set up right

Where do you get the spacer from?

I think the plate, spacer and bolts come as a kit from GM performance parts. Pretty sure it all was less than $90 shipped gmpartsdirect. Can't find the part at the moment though.

That one's pretty pricey though unless you need the certification.

I am curious why you did not just go with a 4L60E which is the electronically controlled newer version of a 700r4. It is imperative that you get that TV cable adjusted correctly, that is why it is shifting incorrectly. It is very simple to adjust the TV cable. It is all "automatic" once you depress the button on the cable near the throttle bracket. Once you press the button, push the throttle to WOT in one smooth continuous move by hand without stopping anywhere in between idle and WOT. You will see the cable outer sleeve has teeth on it near the throttle arm. This is so it can ratchet within that button housing to adjust the overall length of the cable at WOT. Once you perform that procedure you should never have to do it again. (assuming tranny or cable isnt removed). You will burn up that tranny running it with a improperly adjusted TV cable.

The entire flexplate, spacer and longer bolts previously came in a kit from GM (under part #12621399). I checked with GM yesterday to see if they happen to have any left (prior to GM separating the parts, I guess to make more money on people). Im going tomorrow to see if they have it as a kit again, because the price was around $50 for all of it.

If not you have to order this separately

Part Numbers and est. prices (through GMPartsDirect)

Flywheel #12621399 (used to be 12551367), approx. $50
Crank Spacer #12563532, approx. $31
Longer Bolts #19257940 (need 6 of these), approx. $4/each ($24)
Total approx price: $105
You can do this with just the spacer and bolts, but it has to be placed differently according to another thread. I am getting all of the above

The TCI kit is part #399753, it comes with the flexplate, spacer and bolts, but is $230

Just use a stock flexplate and get the $35 crank hub spacer made by Hughes Performance.

X2, this is what i did with my 94 4L60E and just had to elongate the holes in the flexplate to bolt up to the Converter.

a little update.

the dealer was wrong... i ordered all the stuff from gmpartsdirect and in my case, the part number 12621399, came with the spacer, flexplate and 6 bolts, so this was a great deal, i ordered all of the part numbers because i was told they do not offer this as a kit through that first part number, so for anyone wanting to do it this way. order the first part number/flexplate first and wait till you get it to see if it has the bolts and spacer with it. even ordering it the way i did, saved me a ton of money. but i should have just ordered the one part number first, anyhow, i will either send the other 6 bolts back to them, or i will sell the spacer and bolts on here for what i paid which is a great deal, plus shipping...

this is part number 12621399, the spacer is already on the flexplate

these were the extra bolts and spacer (the other two part numbers)

this is everything i ordered with all the part numbers

I ordered extra bolts too, better safe than sorry I figured given shipping is high. It would be cool if GM would go ahead and make the longer holes for us.

You can do it without a special $300 flexplate. The OEM stuff can be made to work.

If your trans has lockup, its easiest to use a toggle switch. The stock ECU won't control it. There are other methods, but they can get fairly complicated.

I had that B&M adjustable one and it was garbage. Would not recommend.
