Default engine noise

I am looking for an engine but am worried about the large number of trucks I see running around that sound like they have a knock in the engine, what causes this and is it a hard fix, and what to look for when getting an engine to avoid the knock, I might have an engine laying around for a year before i complete my swap and don't want something that is knocking when I'm done. Is there a year range to stay away from?

I am not sure about a knock, but I have heard a lot of tics like, lifter noise in stock trucks.

unless you truely know the history of the vehicle the engine is coming from, its just good practice to check bearings, compression, cam wear and lifters among other things before trying to install it in a vehicle that you wish to rely on.

Almost all 5.3's 99-02 have piston slap. Which sounds like a loud knock but it will go away as soon as it runs for 30 sec or so.

I've heard people say this but I have 5.3's that are quiet as church mice no matter how hard I beat on them and a 5.7 that makes me think the thing is coming apart if the water temp is under 100. WTF.

I know my 99 5.3 sounds like a diesel lol. Now my 99 TA didn't have any, so I guess some get lucky. Just informing the OP to not be turned away just bc of a little noise at first cold start-up.

I have read the LS2 went to full floating wrist pins allegedly to cut down on the piston slap.
