Question 160 T-stat worth it?

Just wondering if a 160 stat is worth it in a ls1, i had one in my lt1, but that got driven most the year, meaning cold days in that car were well.....cold. now my new one wont be driven once we get near end of fall. so would a stat help me out at all, be it HP wise or just in general for the engine? Kinda a stupid question but i dont wanna buy one and have an ice box on my hands again thanks for the help

id do it for longevity and some small peformance reasons but make sure to do your fans along with it

I put in a Hypertech 160 and can't say I've seen any
improvement from it, even with fans set to keep it
pretty cool (175-180F is where it really cracks). No
difference in how much spark I can run or how much
enrichment it takes to cover it. I think really that just
getting the fans programmed for consistent coolant
temp is enough.

Oh, and take the MAFS off your future mod list.
It's just trouble in all likelihood.

hmm, it appears from what i read, its kinda a toss up, everyone has their own opinion, but i know ive heard the whole ls1 works better with stock temps, which is what caused me to ask this question in the first place.

Did you click on the link. You change your stocker to a 160* for $5 or less

I tried that mod too, it made for pretty sloppy control
(not a tight temperature range) so that's when I
decided to try the Hype-tech one.

woudln't you need tuning if you go to a 160 t-stat from tehs tock 180 t-stat?

The thermostat shown in the howto, for the shim mod,
is different than the one that came in my '02. Maybe
that's why it works for a '99. But on mine the 'stat
was never fully sealed (with the shim that was supposed
to make for ~170F) and the temp swing was larger than
I liked. The Hypertech maintains a 5-6 degree span with
proper fan setup (174-180). My stocker would hold about
3 degrees (194-197).

nope, prevents the car from hitting full warm up. so the sludge and condensation that collects during cool down never break down. equals bad news for the engine...

Save your money. I can't believe that people pay this sum for a $3 part. There is absolutely no benefit to running an engine too cool. You never burn off the condensation that develops in the engine oil or fuel contamination. This type of stuff appeals to those looking for a cheap gain in horsepower (the uninformed). I've grown up around racing since I was a small child, and I've worked in a few shops for guys that make their living racing full time. An internal combustion engine becomes more efficient up to a point the hotter you run it. You will improve horsepower and BSFC (longer spans between fuel stops) by running it warmer. The key here is "to a point." With modern synthetics you can run an engine hotter without worrying about oil temp problems. You can then adjust timing and A/F ratios to really capitalize on this. Your money would be better served by having a quality shop do a dyno tune session on your car.
