OK, I converted the auto to a six speed. I have never had a manual car before with more than, I don't know, 100 HP? I've driven it for about 300 miles now. Anyway I'm going to the track this Sat. to see what I can get for times. Other than the trans and adding a BMR TA nothing has changed with the car. In good air the auto would run times in sig. What do you think I can run with the six speed?

At 116mph in an auto, I would say 12.0-11.800. Auto,s do a much better job going down the 1/4mile, well most of the time!

I won't quit until I at least run an 11.9. Just can't go backwards to the 12 second club.

Why did you decide to go with the M6?

I think you can stay in the 11's and probably be able to get an 11.8 - 11.9 or so @ 118-120 mph. What's going to kill you is the 60'. I notice you don't have a nine inch or 12 bolt rearend. Not to scare you but if you go for a 1.5x 60' through a six speed you might be towing your car home.

I wouldn't try for any better then a 1.7x 60' until you get a stronger rearend. I know it sucks to go backwards but it sucks worse to break your 10 bolt and pay for a tow on a flatbed.

Good luck.

If you can row the gears and figure out that sometimes less is more with a 6sp you should be able run run danm near the same times but with more mph.

Get a better rear end so you can launch it...

Yeah I know about the rear. It is modified a bit for strength but it is still a ten bolt and I wont be doing any side stepping of the clutch. With 3.73 gears I doubt I will even come close to a 1.5 60. If I did a 1.7 I would be happy, I think. I'm just hoping not to embarrrass myself.

Why did you decide to go with the M6?

I needed the auto for another project I'm working on. Building a Firehawk clone to race with and this car now will be my street car.

This is how it ended:

when you get a good rear end and driven right you will run close to the same time as the auto. Expect to break more parts in the process and gear noise even with a 12 bolt if you leave hard or even shift hard. Stick with stock suspension if you dont want gear noise, stock bushings will help keep from hitting the gears so hard and make them noisy.

These 6 speeds are brutal as i know! More fun but a pain in the ass at the track. Hope its not too bad. You got all winter to get it ready

So it wasn't the rear end I take it, good luck and hopefully it's not too bad.

I was coming down return row after a good pass when the car started to buck like cam surge, I pushed in the clutch to rev it up and the engine siezed with no warning signs.

What did you run on those 3 passes ?

Mystery Bird

I was hoping no one would ask. Alright here goes:
1st run, bogged out of hole, missed third gear, 12.9 @110 2.3 60ft
2nd run, bogged out of hole, got pissed pushed in clutch floored it dumped clutch popped the wheels and took off like a bat out of HE double hockey sticks, missed 3rd again, shut down coasted to end, 16.1 @55
3rd run, launched perfect, slowed down shifting had great run. Pulled onto return row engine siezed, sat there for 1 1/2 hrs before someone towed me back up, by this time the time slip is gone. Called flat bed, went to get a bite to eat, on the way back to my car realized I locked the keys in it! I never found out what the last run was. Beat a Saleen Mustang though. It was a bad day to end a bad year of racing. I did have one excuse, my clutch was not releasing all the way making it hard to get in gear.

from what know about racing can't out shift a auto

True but if you can drive then it's not much lost on shifts. Make up that with mph.

Auto with the right set up can be faster but no where near as fun to drive. However, I wish I had went auto when I bought my car new, I cant make myself switch it over to an auto now.

I like auto for 90% of the driving time.

To each his own but after driving the six speed, I think the high stalled auto is more fun.

Man, that sux. Hope the carnage isn't too bad. FWIW, sell your 6 speed stuff and go back auto...(maybe u kept it all?)

Funny you should say that, I just got home from delivering the 6 speed to its new owner. :thumb:

Stretched rod bolts took out two center rod bearings.

There is no way you were going to pick up that much mph going from a converted auto to a six speed. Ets usually get worse as well as consistency, unless you have slicks and dump the clutch. I have a six but will probably install an auto. It's fun at times but it can be a real pain in the neck. I already bought and had built a 4l80e.

Man, sad story. I hope you got everythig sorted out though. When it comes down to a 6 Speed in an F-Body it all depends on your driving ability and suspension/rear end setup. M6's are definitely harder on the rear (ask me how I know), but if you hav a decent rear and gears they can get the job done just as well. One of my buddies does consistent 1.5x 60's and for his power level runs better than most auto's I know. He can also drive really well.

Sorry that the M6 didn't work out for you, I can assure you they are fun to drive if set up right!

It does not really matter at this point; however, it seems that you were having a common issue with these F-Bodies. There is a drill bit mod you needed to do to the clutch slave to master cylinder line in order to move more fluid back and forth. There is an issue where enough fluid is not transfered back to the master, in order to fully disengage the clutch for the 2-3 shift.
