How many hours labor for cam swap on 5.3 truck?

How many hours labor for cam swap on 5.3 truck? I have the cam I think I want but I'm not doing the install if I don't have to($$$). Must the intake be removed ? I have heard you can hold the lifters up with magnets and pull it out front. I don't want the truck down long so I will hire the job out.Does any one know the book hours on the swap? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> Thanks,Jim

Seems like the book time is 3-5 hrs from what I recall. It is really not too bad a swap. The intake does not have to come off, and you really don't even have to have the magnets for the lifters. You can just spin the cam a few times while still in the block, then pull it out. The lifters will hold themselves up for a few minutes. Magnets would be good for piece of mind though! What cam did you decide to go with?

Re: How many hours labor for cam swap on 5.3 truck? If you have to do springs, I'd say 4-5 hours. The intake stays on and you won't have to pull off the A/C system. Radiator stays in. you will just have to have someone hold it up out of the way while the cam is removed and installed.

FYI the book time for a camshaft would include the labor for removing the cylinder heads since that is the proper procedure per the service manual (something like 12+ hours from what I remember). <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> I would say shop around, your looking at anywhere from $400 - $600 for the install labor with valvesprings at a knowledgable LS1 shop using the common shortcuts. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Re: How many hours labor for cam swap on 5.3 truck? billy at speedtek in hurst tole me 350 to do cam and springs a few weeks back when i was feeling like i didn't want to do it, but i got back into the feeling and now i want to do it again so i'm getting it done free.
