Default information center says check oil????

Does that come on for low oil pressure, or for low oil level? On a cold start there is a faint knock coming from the engine for approx 1-2 mins, then it abruptly goes away. Sounds like a valve train noise but it could be bottom end.

Man its a fresh oil change with mobil 1.... The crank case is completly full of oil. Im just wanting to know if there is a sensor malfuntioning for low oil level,or is it for actual low oil pressure.

Not really a beating sound at all, more like a tapping sound. Like I said earlier, it last for about 1-2 minutes on a cold start, and then immediately stops. Almost like after a fresh oil change knock before the oil pressure primes up, but it last alot longer.

Is it a tap or knock? Slight valve tap is common on start up due to lifter bleed down, not to be associated with worn mains

Just re-read your post. I have a 2-3 second tick until oil pressure builds. If yours last for minutes, sounds more like piston slap

There are two oil messages, Check & Service. Check is low pressure, service is for the oil change. Low pressure could be any of the normal culprits, sensor & oil pump seem to be the most common. If it is the service turn the key to acc and pump the gas pedal three times to clear.

if its an earlyer 04 it has the old style ls1 with the narrow oil passages then it will be a few seconds till you get pressure up top

This is actually my buddies car that he bought a few weeks ago. When we changed the oil we noticed what appeared to be aluminum shavings in the oil... I think he got fauked

This is a very common problem and it still is of today. Not only on the ls1-ls2 engines but also on the ls3's. This particular problem happened on a 2011 LS3 Camaro that I was working on. Apparently there is a defect with the oil pumps where the pressure relief valve sticks. Its even all over the TSB reports on these vehicles. This could be the of cause the low oil pressure you are seeing. Be careful man, if you have any doubts pull the pipe plug right by the oil filter and hook up a manual gauge. Clearly your lifters will make the noise before your bottom end if the pressure is low. However if you continue to drive like this consider your bearings junk and get ready for an overhaul. Hope you figure it out bud.

I didn't know GTOs came with oil level sensors, and from what I read the check engine oil warning is a lack of pressure warning not a low level warning.

Either way, do not start the car up until you fix this. The oil pressure sending unit behind the intake manifold usually reads high when it fails. I've had mine go and it would read 135psi constantly but got no warning because the pcm did not see this as a low oil pressure.

So if it senses low oil pressure, the sensor is most likely working just fine and you do in fact have low oil pressure due to other factors.

The 2004-2006 GTO does not have an oil level sensor nor does it even have a provision in the oil pan for one. That warning is definitely a low pressure indication.

Well we installed a manual gauge , and found hit or miss oil pressure. Would have zero pressure at one start up, and then 40 on the next. We pulled the engine and found all bearings needed to be replaced, and the cam lobes were ate up as well as the lifters. Stay tuned for updates..... Probably gonna do a rebuild with a D1 procharger...

Damn, I'm sorry to hear that man On your rebuild you should consider the Melling pump. Billet gears with the added high pressure spring will always be beneficial.

By looking at these photos I highly doubt your oil pump was the cause of this. It definitely looks like a problem with your valve train, if the lifter cartridges became worn or if the incorrect lifter pre-load was set. I would think that the debris from the damage of the camshaft got sucked into the oil pump causing the pressure relief valve to stick. Can you tell me about your top end set up, heads, valve-train, rockers etc? Sorry to see this man.
