Is my mechanic ripping me off?
The fuel pump in my 2000 trans am needs to be re placed. I towed the car to my mechanic I usually go to. Parts and labor came out to $865.
Is this a realistic price. It's already done and I paid him. I just feel ripped off.

Wow. Got to hate your mechanich lol
I know how you feel man. My mechanic charge me almost $600 for doing a Mickie mouse on the VATS system.
I went back with him cuz I kept having problems with that.
I told him. Your lucky I didn't kill you! Lol
He got scared!!
$600 for the pump? That's a lie!

Actually it looks like you didn't do too bad. I don't know your location but here is an estimate range for my area in Michigan:
http://repairpal.com/estimator/resul...9f6ba3fe9dd5fd
You guys have to realize that just because everybody on this site does the "cut through the floorboard" shortcut doesn't mean a shop is going to. You know what kind of trouble they could get in if they did that especially w/o customer consent? I personally wouldn't want a hole cut in my floorboard....
That is not a fun repair to do the correct way so I think that price is about right. However, he told you the pump was $600 to make himself look better. A GM pump probably wasn't more than $400 once marked up to you and the rest labor.

As you know, that is one job you don't want to do again for a long time. My car has 260K on it now- original fuel pump so when it goes I'll be putting nothing but another AC Delco pump back in.

This is from Alldata and it is pretty accurate on parts prices
Fuel Pump 25338871 $681.68 from GM
The $265 for labor isnt bad at all. Some poeple forget that you get the entire module( pump, basket, level sensor) Yes GM cost more, and persponally I will put a Delphi pump ion a GM vehicle. But ill be damned if I will put an Airtex pump in with my money buying the part.

It's my understanding that when replacing a fuel pump (at a dealership or mechanic) they are supposed to replace the entire fuel pump/bucket assembly, not just the pump like we all do. Most likely reason for that is you have to modify the bucket in some way, shape or form to fit any pump. Even the racetronix you have to modify the pump sleeve. Not that it's a huge modification but it's one nonetheless. I'm guessing it voids the warranty or creates a liability that they don't want to take.
Either way you can go to advance auto and get a fuel pump assembly for under $400. Hope that helps make your decision.

First off, unless I decide it is ok to cut the body of the car, it is NOT up to the Mechanic to cut the body. Coming from a family who works in the industry I can tell you a few times where it was "ok" only due to the fact that the car had a opening already there and needed a little snip to fish out the bucket and saved 4-5 hours.
Everyone needs to keep in mind, your paying for the luxuary of not having to do the work yourself, whether its due to inability, tools, location, time, or whatever. You can't do the work yourself, be prepared to pay. Some of us, including myself have decided to learn on these cars and have saved thousands of dollars over the years and built relationships with people who can help out or have access to a car lift.
All places have mark up on parts and how they decide to write up the R/O is their decision. They need to make a profit and they have over head. If you do not agree with it, do it yourself. Service Advisors constantly need to help out the techs who work on flat-rate to make their flat rate and numbers get shifted.
Also not all places get the same price for parts. Most work on a scale. Sam Taylor Buick and Caddy in FL could get me Opti-sparks for like 300 some odd dollars and what I paid was better then a friend's discount price at a CT Chevy Dealership and the Manager stated its was like 30$ more then his cost.
Its not so much about defending the price this guy paid but rather if you don't like it, do it yourself or pay someone else to fix it.
