Default 5.3l questions

I have a couple questions regarding 5.3l's, specifically turning one into a poor mans LS1. I'm planning on picking up a 1999 5.3 from a truck, but are the older ones as good as like a 02/03/04 block? Do they bore over to a 5.7 as easily too? I'll of course have it sonic checked, but I don't know if this one will be fine or if I should hold out for a newer one. I know they had issues with piston slap but I don't know much about them other than that. I can get it complete with 171,000 miles, supposed to run great, for 400$. My plans would be just to bore it out to a 5.7, toss in a Z06 cam, LS6 intake, headers, and call it good.

Also, I'm planning on picking up a 2WD 4L60E at the same time from an 02 or 03 Chevy van. Are there any output shaft length differences on the 2WD ones, or is there just one length? This is all going to go into a 1986 Buick Regal.

Sounds like a good deal for $400 for complete engine. Your block should be fine to 3.905 bore size, never hurts to sonic check just in case of casting errors from GM. The 4l60 out of the van will be fine. You will need a custom cut driveshaft. Your local drvieshaft shop should be able to handle your needs. For ease of installation go to http://www.brphotrods.com/ and order one of their kits for you car.
