oil pump install... assy lube, vaselene or ???

Default oil pump install... assy lube, vaselene or ???

Back in the good old days, guys packed oil pumps with vaselene to help prime them. To me, that doesn't seem smart. Until things get hot enough to melt the vaselene it seems like it could prevent oil from getting into tight areas. I'm thinking about just coating the inside with assembly lube. Opinions?

If all you are doing a pump install on a running motor, just make sure the pickup tube o ring is in right, finish install, and crank it up. I have done a ton of cam installs with pumps, and have oil pressure in a couple seconds....

I've always used Vaseline on motors that cannot be easily primed, no problems here...

At my buddy's shop we coat the gears with some clear sticky lube, Can't remember what it is called. I think assembly lube would work fine.

I used Redline Assembly Lube, which dissolves as soon as oil hits it. The pump would actually suck air when slowly turned when I installed it like this.

I think I'll just go with the assembly lube. I just don't like the idea of pushing vaselene through the motor. It just seems like it could prevent oil from getting to things until it melts away.

While I wouldn't use vaseline in the pump, it is a positive displacement pump, which means it will move a fixed amount of fluid (air, water, oil, grease) per rotation. It will prime itself and pull the air out of the pipe, the only way it wouldn't would be if the pump rotor/gear was so worn out that air could recirculate from the discharge side to the suction side and short circuit the pump.

The point is, that pump will suck that vaseline through it like **** through a goose. Sure it might place extra load on the pump, but it'll move it.

It's not in the pump that I'm worried about the vaselene, but downstream in the filter or in smaller passages.

Well if you are worried, just take some vaseline, put it in a cup full of oil and mix it up for a bit, see if it breaks down.

All that is necessary is to pour a small amount of oil in the pump before you mount it.

Thanks guys. If all it needs is a little oil, then I can't imagine any harm in using assembly lube when I put the pump back together.
