Cadillac CTS-V - My 2005 V vs. My friend's BMW 335d

Friend of mine bought a 2011 335d(the diesel one) a week or so ago. Since he can never leave a vehicle alone he immediately installed a Burger Motorsports chip and a K&N drop in filter. Anyway we decided to line them up. My V has the mods in the sig so it's basically stock. We just did one run from a dig. Needless to say that thing is a total sleeper! I spun(and hopped) a bit off the line and into second. Immediately he put two cars on me and held clear until the top of fourth where I finally started to reel him in. I was at 138 in fifth by the time I pulled even and we let off. If I had a better launch I would say it would have been even until the top of fourth where I would finally roll away. Definitely impressive though... a car as fast as my V with the fuel mileage of my wife's '07 Mini Cooper S...
Unfortunately I have no video since we were just BSing after work and that would be incriminating evidence lol...

I'm not sure. My friend says it drives like a normal car except he gets nearly 40mpg on the highway and has gobs of low end torque. It's rated at like 420 ft/lbs from the factory. You can barely hear the engine too. Just a hint of the diesel clatter. Unfortunately they don't make a manual version. Too much torque I guess.

my friend has the x5D its a tq monster and get 26 mpg's highway!!! , i just got a truck for the winter (vw touareg V10tdi) and all i can say is omg the TQ is unreal i feel more comfortable going fast in my truck then the V.
i hate to admit it though, BMW is probably one of the best engineered cars on the road.

265 stock hp and 425 torque.... 0-60 stock is a hair under 6 seconds. How much does a tune give on these things? What do they run in the quarter?. I would think from a roll you should take him easier.

Yep, TQ is ungodly.
We have a sponsored diesel race truck that eats Vettes/Stangs/Vipers all day long.
It's funny actually.
It's a white 06 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins. A few motor mods. =)
Converted it to a short bed single cab.
Runs 10.4's all day long.
Then I drive it back to pits, grab the floor jack, throw the street tires back on, pile all the stuff back in the bed, and drive home.
And it also gets 26 MPG.
Not bad with 1200 ft lbs of TORKS.

The Burger motorsports chip claims 60+ whp and 100+ ft/lbs. with the way his car runs I believe it. His estimate is that it runs about a 12.8 with a good launch.

There is a vid on youtube of one running a 13.0 flat not sure of mods but it looks to have different wheels and tires on the rear. Thats just crazy for a diesel car.

at the track day i was at the 335d that was there lapped everything in our group minus the cayman, 911 turbo, z06 and 1 m coupe.
it was fast in the corners and once we got straight it just walked away from me.

It's a turbocharged car so a chip has huge gains. We can really only change the fuel and timing but they can add more boost. So it really doesn't surprise me he was able to hang with you. I ran a modded 335i up an onramp and I wasn't able to pull very much on him either. We didn't take it very high though so I would have started to pull away if we kept going past 90.

His chip only plugs into the injector rail. I think it just bumps up the amount of fuel going through it. the chip itself has a dial inside it to turn it up or down. From my limited understanding of diesels simply adding more fuel makes a huge difference. There isn't much of an aftermarket here for the diesel yet since its only been in the US since 2009, but the 335i apparently has a pretty large aftermarket with several in the 11 second range.

My son has a Ford turbo diesel pick up that he uses a handheld Predator to tune. The preprogramed tunes are 20, 40, 60, 80, & 100 horsepower (If I remember correctly). The 80 hp tune lights up the tires and black smoke pours out the exhaust like a mother. Obviously they add more fuel and more boost. The bigger tunes give great seat of the pants feel. He bought the Predator used off of E-bag for a hundred bucks, nice power increase for the money. My Z06 in contrast felt like it picks up 5 hp with the Predator tune...waaa

Funny that I see this thread today. A guy locally (who I do not know personally) has a 335 that I raced in my G8. I saw him this morning while heading to work (in the V). I tried to chase him down through traffic but it was not meant to be. Dude straight hauls ass all the time
Anyways, his has exhaust and some visual mods. Beyond that is anyone's guess. But in my G8, I gave him the jump from about 55 and he put a bus on me in no time. At 120 I let out and was still 2 cars back. I'd had to have hit 150 to catch him. For reference, my G8 raped my V because it was fast. My V beat a stock G8

You FLASH a tune onto the PCM. Similar to how you flash new firmware onto a phone. There is no such thing as a "chip" anymore. Its just a pet peeve of mine when people refer to a PCM being flashed as a "chip".

Ok so they call it a tuner but it's pretty much a chip. Plugs in to the injector rail and can be removed without a trace for warranty work. If the PCM is flashed then the dealer will know it and probably void your warranty.
EDIT: I just noticed that the hyperlink itself even calls it a chip.

Thanks JCC but I know the difference between a chip and a tune, my car is tuned and the BMW's use an actual chip you just plug in. My Typhoons and Syclone also use chips.

Sorry guys, Not familiar with BMW and that they indeed use an actual "chip". I'm just used to hearing the two used interchangeably with LSx vehicles and its annoying.
"Hey dood you should get yer self a chip in that thing". "My buddys Si has one from ebay and it increases his powah 100%"

It's a common misconception. Tons of people tell me they want to put a "chip" in their vehicles and then look at me crazy when I ask them why they don't get dyno tuned or get a programmer to reflash the ECU for better results.

Bumping this thread again.
Got to run this same 335i this morning. It was a win for me even though my clutch is slipping at high speed shifts. Not sure the mph we started at, but I went with an agressive 3 to 2 downshift (25 mph?) and ran the car to at least 100. I put probably four cars on him slipping 2-3 and 3-4
What is funny is that I am sitting at work crusing the local craigslist and see his car up for sale. So here is the rundown. Let me know if you think this is a good win for me or not.
07 BMW 335i twin turbo. Manual shift. Sport package. Dinan exhaust and intake.
No mention of a tune though

Don't feel like starting a new thread for a kill.
Just ran a 06 300 SRT8. Guy had CAI, Magnflow and cutouts. Didn't really pay attention to my start and stop speeds, but it was a highway run. I think I downshifted to 2nd for the start and got out of it somewhere in early 4th. I had a little over a car length on him. I was suprised because I thought there was a real chance I would lose.

I'm stationed at Ft. Bliss in a HET unit and hate it. El Paso has ruined my paint. Anywho since we are talking kill stories I ran a E55 AMG(2003-2006 model) this morning from 75-about 115 and got killed. I only dropped it into 4th so I was trying to accelerate from low in the rev range. I pulled a half a car, then he cruised by me and put about two cars on me before I started to reel him in. We let off because we were approaching a overpass that is notorious for cops sitting on the other side. I looked up the stats and it looks like he was stock. 5.4 supercharged with 469 and 510 at the crank. Curb weight of around 4050. I want a V2!

Cute little BMW - 6 years newer, two turbo's richer, and it can almost hang. Wonder what the MPG's at full throttle are in comparison? Then factor MPG versus Deisel fuel cost... Cute indeed.

yeah because buying these sort of vehicles is done for just wot pulls....
lets not forget the massive mpg difference, better build quality in parts and interior. Those dont matter when buying a performance sedan/coupe

I am a big BMW fanatic. The engineering that goes into them is incredible. I have had and still have a couple of BMWs. Right around this time last year I purchased a 2011 X5M as a daily driver and right off the showroom floor, every aspect of this cars performance has left me speechless, especially for an SUV. BMW really stepped their game up with the new turbocharged engines and I think they have set a standard for other vehicle manufacturers to reach. I'm very excited to do a down-pipe and tune on it along with an exhaust when I feel more comfortable with whats available on the market.
However, BMW offers a completely different style and ride. Thats when I decided it was time to get some muscle in my garage which led me to the purchase of my now monster V.

My only personal experience with cars from the BMW group is a 2007 Mini Cooper S that my wife bought while I was deployed and we owned for five months and 5000 miles. The car was an absolute blast to drive, but the clutch going completely out at 37k and not being covered under warranty due to time led to the purchace of a 2012 Chevy Cruze. Not nearly as fun of a car to drive(we did still get a manual transmission to at least have some kind of engaging driving experience), but very impressive in terms of comfort and build quality, especially compared to domestic compact cars from previous years. As a bonus, I'm pretty sure the trunk is bigger in the Cruze vs. the V lol. I agree with everyone's opinion on BMW engineering(with the exception of Mini), but if the car is that damn good, one would think they would stand by their product and offer a better warranty. It's pretty bad when a Hyundai has double the warranty of a BMW in terms of time and mileage.

As an update my friend with the 335d has since done a muffler delete which dropped like 80 lbs from the car and plans to do a DPF(urea injection for emissions) delete, add a downpipe, intercooler, and upgraded pluming, along with having the ECU reflashed. He's basically kissing his warranty goodbye along with his transmission. Estimated power and torque are about 350ish and like 550 at the wheels when said mods are complete. I must admit it will be pretty funny watching a pretty white Beemer belch a ton of black diesel smoke whenever he gets on it. Why he's doing all of this I do not understand, but this is the same guy who in the span of one year has gone from a 2009 G8 GXP(which he modded) to a 2011 GMC Sierra Z71(which was lifted with big wheels and tires from the dealer and fruther modded by him) to his BMW.
