Default Supercharged, or not?

I want to keep the present cam, TR224, & mildly ported stock heads. Rod bolts are ARP's.
Will a supercharger match up with this cam, and if so, which do you recommend?
Would a turbo be a safer bet?
I'm not sure that the cost of supercharging will be worth it when played against any HP increase.

You may like the cam, but it's not ideal for forced induction, especially if it's on a 112lsa. The investment in going to forced induction is substantial, and trying to base you decision based on the current camshaft is backwards. It's like buying a new home based on what wallpaper is in the guest bathroom.

My advice is figure out which type of forced induction you really want, then swap the camshaft to match that setup.

I should have mentioned that the cam is a 114.
Does this mean that if one wants a blower, that the cam must be a blower-designed cam?

No, it doesn't mean it has to be, but to design a FI setup around a cam is kind of backwards. Will the TR224 work with a blower, sure, but other cams may work considerably better, that's all, and in the scope of things, a cam change is not a big deal.

Look at the turbo thread From Tinkrd. He has a turbo without a turbo cam and made some serious numbers. I think there are some good blower or turbo cams out there, but there are also a lot of hype that makes you think you have to have that cam to make power. The cam you already have is somewhat small would probably work pretty well. I would figure out what you want to do blower wise and leave the cam in there. Then maybe later on switch to a FI cam.

8 psi with your cam and ported heads with a ProCharger could get you an additional 160 to 200 rwhp. The TR224 cam responds very well with a ProCharger, if you do go with a ProCharger I'd leave your cam in there. Bob

Good call Bob. I wasn't trying to discourage him from keeping the TR224, but rather be open to options. Glad to hear it works well for his future plans.

Bob,

The LSA on this cam is 114. From what I know (not too much!) about superchargers, the LSA should be less in order to obtain the greatest effect from a blower. So, in my case, would a 112 or less have been a better choice as opposed to the 114?
Thanks, Glenn

You want a wider lsa, which means a higher number. Your 114 will work great for a blower.

Basically, it is the other way around as the post above this states. Bob

FWIW, my cam is a very non-boost friendly cam. 231/234 .648/.598 111lsa. I didn't even have FI in mind when I did my cam swap, then came across a good deal on a D1 so it switched my path completely (for the better I might add.) but my car made 383 with cam only then the blower at ~5.5psi with a FMIC it made 571. So that's 188more horse. Not bad for stock 853's, and my cam.

I would say its pretty good. 571 on 5.5psi is pretty awesome

Wide lsa is some kind of Internet talk. All our high hp pro charged cars have tight lsa's.

Interesting, I wonder what kind of power I can make with my set up?

Don,
Are you saying that lower LSA is more advantageous (ie 110-112), or the reverse?
At what LSA does blower power become disadvantageous?
I'm still trying to get my car to you for a tune...after a low oil pressure issue is solved.
Thanks, Glenn

Ok, higher number. Is that better, lol? 114 is better than a 106 for a blower car.

so anything between 110-115 will work fine with a blower er? or 12-115...111-117. where does the line get drawn?
