Default M6 to Auto?

Here before long I plan on going A4 to M6.. I love having the 6-speed to mess around in, but I think it's time to go automatic.. any opinions on transmissions? Im pretty stuck on either an A4 or a 4L80E.. I realize that with a 4L80E I can beat the **** out of my car without ever breaking a sweat, but there are so many GTO's on stock A4's in the 10's (not saying they would last, but I'm sure they arent entirely too expensive to build up a bit) Comments and advice are appreciated, thanks all!

How about this, you go bracket race with an M6 car competetively, and then explain how 6K dumps are better on any part of your car are better than a launch in an auto. Once you do both of those things, I'll let someone chop my nads off. Point being, auto's take less abuse and are more consistent (obviously) Ever heard this?

Row, row, row your car
Gently down the track,
By the time you cross the line,
My auto's been there and back

Ever heard of a joke?

Yeah, if I did nothing but track it, I'd have an auto too.

And if any of you guys with an A4 want to actually work out a trade I'd probably be able to do that.. I'd prefer it at least had a converter, if not then +cash. I'm also not sure everything it takes to do, but I believe with the exception of a few small headaches it would just be the transmission, obviously, dash/center console, computer, crossmember, driveshaft.. I'm no professional mechanic so I'm probably forgetting some stuff, but I'm sure one long day and a case of beer could get it done!

Calm down killer, same goes on this end, Im giving you a hard time. My whole thing is that I would like to built a competitively consistent track car that I can still drive to and from the drag strip reliably, and still go mess around on the street. Tracks besides the track in my home town I would obviously still trailer, haha.

Lmao, love it! Well a lot of guys will tell you that a 60le can be built to hold just fine, and that a 80le is not necessary. I'd say why not go big, and build on that? 4l80e will not be something you regret imo.

Well, I definitely think the same way as you, but try to have some common sense as well. A 4L60E can be built strong enough to have no definite limit, but the money you would spend doing that when you start getting close to what would be 4 digit power numbers, a 4L80E would be more cost efficient. However, I never plan on having numbers like that (although it would be nice). I plan on running mid to low 10s once I'm done (on spray) and I honestly dont feel like thats quick enough, nor throwing out enough power to NEED a 4L80E.. I'm not real intelligent with transmissions but I guess the way Im thinking is that there are so many people running 10s with stock A4's (stalled converter of course). I don't know how long a stock A4 in the 10s will last, but you would think it would be too ard to make it reliable at a mid-10 time.. I'm not sure. Some insight is all I'm looking for, or someone who would honestly want to trade transmissions.

It was a lot of fun. I've missed the last two though.

Just a FYI, there's a guy over on ls2gto.com that swapped transmissions, and after reading through everything he went through, I'd rather slam my ***** in a car door before trying it. It sounds much less painful than the swap.

I think his username is mechanic58.

I was thinking of how I could just buy an auto, swap parts, then sell mine stock (still with the clutch of course)... but that would mean a motor swap because my motor has 10k on it! ugh! I guess we will see. I have axle stubs as well.............

Default Trans Swap Info

Mine was the first M6 to A4 swap done. The attached document tells pretty much what you will need.

I have since gone to the TCI 4L80 after 3 failed 4L60's. Good luck.

I have many dilemmas like that. If I could just hit the lottery, it would help.
