Just curious as to how large of a cam the stock stall can handle in a A6 GT

I'm seeing people run the livernois stage 1 and 1C, and new eras 228/240 cam, but those are about the only 2 I see people using.

This is a debated issue on other sites too. I am working to the same goal. I am not into wanting a new converter, so how big can I go with the stock unit. Currently I am running a .557 lift cam on a 109LSA. We have finally reached a point with the tune to rid it of the dreaded push. It is a torque monster making 390lbft on a conservative dyno... I have been searching and I do know people using .600+ lift on stock converters and even running DoD active. So, anything you find from most of the sponsors will work if you have the time to tune it right. The tune really is the key as long as the other components are upgraded to handle the lift.

The Livernois stage 1 is about the biggest you would want to go. I had the TSP 229/236 and it pushed the brakes badly before the converter. Tuning was not the problem. My car was tuned by Frost and he had about 8 hours in the trans tune. Shift points, shift firmness, everything was dead on. Performance down low will also suffer with a big cam and no converter. A converter flashes and gets the car into the powerband.

I've had canned stalled cars before, and I'd like to run a stall it just isn't in the finances yet. However I will be getting rid of the DOD, so what better time to throw in a cam?

I think I remember someone mentioning a cam along those specs. Any particular reason why? It'd be nice to hear a sound clip. So far the new era cam sounds the best

i run the stage 1c, installing a tvs soon and it pushes the brakes a little. barely noticable to the passengers. i may do a PI 2800 stall convertor down the road. vengeance has some awesome cams. LEP as well. vector, livernois all have great cams with alot of testing.
if u want, i can post vids of mine with the 1c under wot

Sure, idle would be nice as well. Ultimately if I can make it financially happen do the whole DOD, cam, and stall at once

I thought that cam pushed on you until you replaced the stock converter... what did it idle at? That's the key. Any cam that needs to idle beyond 700 rpm is going to push w/ a stock converter setup on the G8 A6.

I've got that, a little push BUT nothing annoying - very nice little cam. Made 414rwhp.

Sounds pretty good. How's its manners for a daily driver as far as low speed bucking surging etc

Low speeds my 223/231 bucks a little, not bad. I do not like it in stop and go traffic (Boston) 0-15-0...

I'm thinking I better get a converter first. I don't want the whole shitty low speed deal especially with a smaller cam.

I only ran it for about a month w/stock stall and had no issues IMO but every person/car/tune is different ... if I wasn't racing the car I probably would of left the stock stall in

What cam is that. I remember reading about it not long ago, or something similar, and then couldn't find it when I went back to search for it.

Did you come up with those cam specs? Or did pat G, Geoff or one of them spec it out for you

Tainted,

Patrick G & Geoff are great guys to work with.
They helped me pick the most cam I could use on stock converter.
I haven't installed it yet, still gathering parts. LOL
Specs. below:

EPS 222/226 .597 intake / exhaust.605 @ 115LSA+3

Good Luck!!!

Pat G is who I'm gonna end up having spec me a cam. However I'm going to have my heads milled .020 for better CR.

I figure when I have the $ I can have the heads ported, add the stall and have Pat spec me out another cam.

Hate this damn mobile internet!

But I suppose just getting rid of the DOD and at least a small cam will hold me over for a while and bring me some peace of mind that dod shit wont destroy the motor.

You"ll be happy working with Patrick for sure.

I haven't done my dod delete because I'm saving for new heads to go with cam.
I more than likely will go with the new PRC LS3 after market heads. There is a lot benefits to these heads over factory castings. These have 250cc intake runner to keep velocity up, which should work great with my mild cam.

Yea i seen your post on g8board about your setup. Those are some nice heads, but you could really benefit with a stall and a bigger cam since youre adding heads.

I totally agree with you but, I wanted a stealth cam and I'm not ready to do a stall just yet.

Also, I'll probably go with blower or turbo later and the cam is perfect for that.
