road noise dampening project
hello, in about a month I'm going to start pulling all the interior and trunk carpeting to the lay down some vibration dampener and sound barrier. while i have all the seats and carpeting out is there anything else i should upgrade/fix before i put it all back in? I'm thinking about flushing the tranny so i can install trains fluid while the center console is out but thats about it. anyone done this before and replace some other things once you've taken everything out?

I bought 100 square feet and prob used about eighty. It's easier to do it in small sections. Just make sure you cut out the holes for all your bolts.
Yes I did one layer of the 80 mil. It is rattle tarp brand.

Hey there!
I just did something like you are describing.
I tore out my old dirty, full-of-holes factory carpet and then added 80 square feet of damplifier pro to the interior. Laying the sound deadner isn't hard. It's actually pretty easy. Just make sure you have a good razor knife and a quality roller.
A note: I only used the dampner. This product is designed to reduce vibration. It will enhance your sound quality when u listen to your stereo - and it will provide some barrier from sound - but if your goal is really reducing noise in the cabin (ie road noise) then you are going to want a foam product (closed cell?) Such as luxury liner (google it if u want, it's also second skins product). That's where you will see the real reduction in sound.
Also, are you re-installing your factory carpet? If not - replacing a carpet isn't exactly easy - but can be done with patience. All carpets, besides OEM will require some cutting to make it fit.
Best of luck!

yes i am planning to re install the factory carpet. im debating taking it somewhere and having it washed while its out. as of know im planning on doing about 80 square feet of second skin dampener and then a layer of there luxury liner. im also going to attempt to do some sort of sound test. something like inside the car start up comparison, maybe a highway test and some local roads.

With 80 square feet I only had two feet left for the doors. I'd say 85 square feet would be ideal!
If you plan on adding a stereo - it's a great time to run wires
Also don't add luxury liner under the drivers side / pedals - there's not much room for that.

^^ Would a dry cleaner take that big lump of floor carpet??? Mine needs to be steam cleaned or something...... Planning winter projects now..
I may do this sound dampening thing too. The stereo desperately needs it too.

Look up Second Skin Audio, the vibration dampner is just step 1, u still need to put some closed cell foam over it to isolate the noise, and as we all spray anywhere you can't really get to, or tight 3 angle corners. Also tape wiring down to help keep it from rattling around.
make sure you do prep to the metal, and make sure to use the ROLLER and roll it as flat as can be!

im not excited about adding more weight, but the car isnt raced competively so im hoping the sound improvement will out weigh making the car a little slower. maybe another 150 lbs?

project update. i purchased 2 boxes of damplifier, 12x24, 20 sheets per box for a total of 40 12x24 sheets as well as a 90 square foot roll of luxury liner. In the pictures i only used 1 box of damplifer and it covered a good amount of area so far.

final thoughts
so ive completed the install and it was a lot of work. i did a damplifier layer and then a luxury liner layer. i dont have the exact numbers on total weight but the luxury liner alone was 125 lbs. my guess would be 155 lbs all together. i did notice an improvement in sound different however it was difficult for me to remember exactly how it was before the install. i did it over the winter so when i took the car out after installing everything i hadnt driven the car for 4 months so i couldnt remember how it used to sound. I did however notice a huge difference when driving in the rain. before the install the rain being shot up on the undercarriage was very loud for me, to the point where it was difficult to talk on the cell phone. now its very quiet in the rain. obviously it depends on the amount of rain coming down but even if the road was just wet from a previous rain it used to be very loud. CURRENTLY im looking for new rear springs because the back end is sagging slightly. The sagging is probably due to the added weight in the rear however i cant say for sure. I installed all new bilstein hd shocks when doing the sound barriers but i reused the stock springs. final thoughts, if i had to do it again i wouldnt do 2 layers just because it was a lot of work. i would pay extra for the material with sound damplifier and the luxury liner mix. i was curious if this would affect my gas mileage and i havent noticed a difference and i check my MPG at every fill up. i also wasnt sure if there would be any fitment issues with the carpeting going back with the material added but it went back in with no problems. also i was concerned when adding material to the doors that it would cause the doors to sag and damage the hinges. i havent noticed any issues with that either. lastly i wouldnt buy the foil tape second skin sells. i found some nausau tape or something at home depot that was thicker, stickier, easier to peel, a ton better and cheaper.
