Default sidewall cracks in MT DRs

I went to the track yesterday & tires only had 15 psi so was inflating the rears up today & noticed major seperation on the sidewall. Tires are MT DRs 275/40/17, both tires look like this. Street driving 25-30 psi, 15-19 psi at the track. Tires were bought new in 2010, first used them this spring. Anyone else seen this before?

Yikes....did you let them freeze? That was a big no no with Nittos and would cause the same problems.

Huh? They were in my(heated) basement last winter until I mounted them in April. The temps recently dropped some, it dipped in the 30s at night a few times but I really dont think thats why this happened. I ran Nittos the first 2 yrs & never had this problem.

My tires are the same age, mine are not cracked in the same spot, I got the MT 2's. they cracked in the tread some. Doesn't bother me as my car mostly sits, and street driven only anymore.

but those pics make it look like the tread is separating from the sidewall! yikes!

Nittos were known to do the exact same thing when left in sub-freezing temps. I'm not saying every set did it, I'm just saying it was common. I'm wondering if some MTs may start doing the same thing. That's why I asked if they had ever been out in the cold weather.

+1. I've owned two sets of 555r's that developed cracks perpendicular to the wheel rim.

How long did you own them before the cracks developed? Did you try to get them
warrantied?
I owned 2 sets that didnt, actually 3 sets. I had a set on my GTP. Got about 10k miles out of each set on the SS & put the car in storage over winter & no cracks at all. Just no tread left so needed new ones. That was Nittos.

Same EXACT thing happened to my old set. Ran low psi for to long. Lowered them down to 15 psi at the track, drove with them like that for about a week, crack appeared.

My NT-555R's have been on since 2004 or 05. The car sat outside for at least 2 winters. Zero cracks. I have also never had extremely low air pressure in them.

i contacted mickey thompson customer service, and told them about the problem and showed a pic and this is the reply...

I regret to hear about the issue you are having with you tires. Looking at the photo attached, I do notice the cracking at the base of the tread and top of the sidewall.
Based on what we have seen with this condition, this is typically for tires that have been ran on a Dyno. If this should be the case, then the tires would not be covered under warranty, as they should not be ran in that type of environment. If this is not the case, they it would be suggested to contact your dealer and send the tires back for a warranty inspection.

Thanks

LOL!!! Ran on a Dyno... but it can be ran down the strip?

Anyways i never ran my on a Dyno and mine did that same thing. Im surprised he blew you off to go back to your dealer. For me i get mine online, so it would of be a PITA.

Sorry to hear your issues, if i wasn't already on a new set of different sizes, i would be helping you out and bitching to M/T also.
