Default Just got my new block, possible problem. I want your opinions

ok, just got my new Darton block from JD's. Aparently it got damaged a little durring shipping. There is a very slight scatch on the deck, and I was wondering if you think it will affect head gasket sealing capabilities. attached are some pictures of the scratch. I honestly think it will be fine with a small amount of sealant like you would use normally w/ these MID blocks when using a normal headgasket. BTW, we are using a cometics MID specific gasket.

I wouldn't risk it. I'd have it resurfaced and the rotating assembly checked to be sure all is in-line.

Too high dollar of a setup to trust ot some sealant.

I would clean it real good maybe scrape it with something sharp and put in some JB WELD but make sure to level it with deck surface maybe with the sharp edge of a razorblade held at a 90 angle, thats a pretty deep scratch man!!

I will tell you wright now the cometic gasket will not seal that.I sell the cometic gaskets and have used alot of them you must have a dead flat serface with a ra finish of 50RA or better for them to seal. The black coating that is on the gaskets is a thin layer of vinton rubber .001 thick it is for cold sealing it will not fill any grooves or scratches.

came on a pallet.... JD got it from steve @ race-eng... I've spoken with steve and he feels that some of the locktite 515 or 518 flange sealant will do the trick.

Well you can,t deck the block as it probably it cut as close as it can be you weld it because of the heat it is a water seal problem not combustion,JBWELD will hold on the aluminum. If it were mine and it was the shipper,s fault I,d make them replace it or is it a problem from machine shop???Anyway how would you fix it any better ideas?????????????

I don't think we can have the block decked anyfurther. first off... my compression would end up being liek 12.3:1, way too high for my goals.

I believe it is the shippers fault, but there is also possiblity that it wasn't packed properly. So, oy, and it could be up to a 4 month wait for the shipper to pay the claim. That and the insurance has a 500 dollar deductible also.

I would have that fixed before assembly for sure, and JB Weld is not the option I would choose.

It is hard to tell from the photo, how deep is the damage?

need to measure it yet. and no, there was nothing covering the deck, other than the plastic. The way the block was shipped makes me wonder if I will even be able to get anything out of fedexfreight.

I would find out who's at fault and have them repair it ! Or pay for it. Why chance it?
