Default Help me decide here guys... Please

After tunning and a great 365 rwhp and 364 torque, My Transmission takes a dump on me.
Went to 3 different shops in my area, and all of them told me the same thing.. You are going to have to get it rebuilt!
Everyone is telling me its going to be between 1k to 1200 hundred.

I searched online and found this shop in austin tx, where im at. And the boss man there told me if i bring the Transmission to him, he will rebuid it for 750 bucks. With a Free shift kit upgrade to it!!!
I mentioned to him that i want a 3600 stall, and right away he told me that was too much stall for the car. Why I dont know, he drives a vette and not a fan of big stalls for some reason.

The next thing really caught my attention... He said for 100 dollars more, he will throw in a 2500 stall, which is what he recommends and assures me ill be happy with the extra hundred dollar investment, with full updates from Gm. And my tranny will last longer due to less heat, even more so with an external cooler.

In a nut shell... 850 dollars for a transmission rebuild, shift kit and 2500 stall, with a 1 yr warranty.

I think im going to do it, this way i can do some 373 gears, and if not happy go with the 3600 stall later.

What do you guys think??? Is that a deal?, and will a see a performance change with the 2500 stall?

All input welcome.

Im on a bit of a dead line... Hope to get some input soon.

This is my .02 It's a deal on the rebuilt trans part if it is going to be built right at that price. Plus the 2500 stall isn't what you want, I think you will be happier with the 3600 stall. My advise to you is save your money up and get what you want the first time. Another thing it cost to play ....

I would stay away from this guy. I don't care what sort of car(s) he owns, anyone that feels 3600 stall is too much for an LS1 with a 224 cam is not a person who's advice should be taken IMO. Even a stock LS1 will do great with a 3600; one with a cam will want at least 3600 for best results. I think you will find that every member here that has any experience with building auto LS1 cars for performance will disagree with this trans shop guy's recommendation of a 2500 stall.

I also wouldn't put much faith in a $750 4L60E build. I'd look at a shop like FLT, if you don't mind the shipping. Or find a local shop that specializes in performance trans builds and is familiar with the 4L60E.

You would notice much better overall performance with a 3600 stall and stock gears than you'll ever notice with a 2500 stall and 3.73s.

PS. A $100 torque converter is probably a stock TC that has been modified to increase stall speed about ~1k rpm over stock (hence the "2500"). This will be far less efficient than a good aftermarket, smaller diameter converter.

stay away. you don't want anything lower than a 3200 stall. 3600 is a better choice. look or talk to perfomabuilt.

any possibility of getting a salvage yard 4L80E and doing the conversion? Costs a little bit for the conversion parts, but you get a transmission even stock out of those can handle 400-500whp pretty easy. Put in a stall and a shift kit, some 3.23s and you should be good to go for a long time.. you can PROBABLY get a junkyard 80E for a couple hundred bucks.

I wish I had more info on the conversion parts. I haven't gotten that far in my build yet. I know you need a flexplate, crossmember, and some wireharness because the 80e has 2 VSS and the 60 only has 1. Driveshaft may be ncessary with that too?

It may not be your best route, but I figured I'd toss it out there.

there's a lot of good vendors here on the forums for 60s and 80s that I'm sure would be happy to help.

This shop specializes on gm auto trans... I do have 323 gears already. It's so dang hard to decide.
As far as a rep, they do have a good rep. But yes, i will do further research and try to upgrade to a 80e, or a very very good build for my current tranny.

The price just sounds to good to be true... What a Dilema i swear!!!

What happens with a high stall, say 3600, when you're cruising on the highway at 1800? Sorry for the dumb question... all manual in my experience

Not sure either, auto with stock tranny. I was hoping to hear that a 2500 stall would be better than the stock torque converter, for just an 100 dollar investment.

No one here with any positive feed back... Or is it one of those things where i Should just run from?!!

Just don't do it. Get one from a sponsor on here. Get a performabuilt and you have a chance of it being free lol. Do it once and do it right. At the end of the day, local shops around here are pretty good at finding excuses to not warranty the work they warranty.

I have to agree with you on how they are with honoring their Warranty...

Then 3.73s will do little for you. 3.23 to 3.73 swap isn't worth much in terms of ET, and frankly it will be worth almost nothing with a 3600+ stall.

Again, if your choice is stall or gears, a 3600 stall/3.23 LS1 car will dominate a 2500 stall/3.73 LS1 car at the track, all else being equal with your setup.

Once you reach TC lock-up speeds (which you will be at when cruising on the highway), rpms will drop to the same as with a stock TC.

Run. I see nothing positive about a 2500 stall for your setup. If you're going to do it, do it right IMO. If your budget is limited, then use the money that you would have spent on gears to get the proper stall speed. Again, all else being equal, a 3.23/3600 stall LS1 will beat a 3.73/2500 stall LS1 every time. And once you have the 3600 stall, there will be almost zero additional ET reduction going to a 3.73 gear anyway.

it sounds like he is offering you a very good deal on a stock rebuild with a couple minor performance upgrades.

With your posted dyno numbers you will again spit out a stock trans while doing it and I am assuming here but paying the labor get it built with proper upgrades to handle your power level & more since you seem to be headed towards the more lol

and put a nice yank or vigilante stall in the upper 3,000's in there

I wouldn't think much of a warranty from most places, if you blow up your tranny they'll likely say you were racing you car and that voids there warranty.

Thanks for the break down Ws6. Does make more since to do it right the first time... And yes im sure even if it does have a good warranty, it will get void once they see it was running hard.

Built trans? Name brand only... Converter? Name brand only..

Do it once, do it right. You will pay for it but it will pay for itself in the long run.

Run a PTC converter. Buy some 100$ restalled 4 cyl converter like he is selling you and you will hate your car.

Well, rebuild, just a lil stronger than stock... I have a thread with some of the parts that will be going in the tranny if i decide to go this route, in the newbie section.

Glad you made and Appearance!
