I have heard a few different stories about if I will get my car during AIT.
My MOS is 68k Medical Lab Specialist. I have 52 weeks of AIT. 26 weeks at Ft Sam-Houston and a 26 week residency at one of 19 places. The recruiters said that I may get to have my car because training is so long. At the same time though I do not want to get my hopes up. I will be graduating basic March 28-ish, so racing season will be in full swing by the time I get settled in at Ft. Sam. Any input or experience would be appreciated.

You should be able to get it for the residency AIT, the first 26 will probably be in the barracks with cadre still in your face. You'll still be new to the Army so don't expect a whole lot of freedom right off the bat. Also I wouldnt recommend racing while in training, at not on the street. Good Luck with basic and AIT, welcome to the Army, hope you like it.

So out of these places which one is going to have the closest and best quality track nearby. I get to choose where I do my residency based on rank and I do not want to accidentally pick somewhere really shitty

Fort Sam Houston, TX
Fort Gordon, GA
MAMC, Tacoma, WA
TAMC, Honolulu, HI
WRAMC, Washington, DC
Fort Bliss, TX
Fort Hood, TX
Fort Belvoir, VA
Fort Jackson, SC
Fort Leonard Wood
West Point, NY
Fort Knox, KS
Fort Riley, KS
Fort Sill, OK
Fort Polk, LA
Fort Bragg, NC
Fort Campbell, KY
Fort Carson, CO
Fort Stewart, GA

That is the whole list of places. Keep in mind there are a few on this list I think I can safely go ahead and cross out.

west point is kind of cool - small post but right on the hudson river and only an hour's metro ride to the big city!

Stay around Fort Leonard Wood and run in the KOTS series at Rogersville next year. ;)

I don't think you'll be able to take your car to AIT ..but people do it, hide it in storage / parking lots, and get away with it. I was friends with a few people at AIT that had cars there and they hid it so well that I didn't find out until we were leaving. Not saying I recommend it, but it can be done..

When I went through AIT at Ft. Huachuca, AZ we initially could not have our cars. My AIT was 6 months long, and during that time we were able to obtain 'phases' that pretty much granted your 'regular freedoms' back. Once we hit either 3 or 3+ (which was the highest) you could have your car. Luckily once I hit 3/3+ it was Christmas time, so I flew back to Houston, then drove my car back. Another perk to it was, once we were done with AIT, I went to Airborne school in Ft. Benning, GA and they pay you and give you more time to get there if you drive. So me and a buddy packed up and were able to split gas, and driving to make it back to Houston pretty quick, have a night or two of partying, then strapped back in and headed to GA. Just dont be like us and show up to your next duty station, park, and literally walk into formation as its forming. LOL, talk about an exhausting day.

I have actually heard that Hawaii is not all that great. It would be a lot harder to get over here to visit friends and family as well. i think I would feel stranded.

My Soldiers were telling me that, at FT Gordon AIT, POVs are allowed at 8 weeks of training. They all graduated less than 3 months ago.

About your locations: I'm going to comment only on the places I KNOW about.

Fort Gordon, GA had a 1/4 mile track nearby and is very close to Atlanta, which has a road course.

Fort Bliss, TX doesn't have any tracks, but Las Cruces, NM is an hour away and has a 1/4 track.

Fort Polk, LA is about 2 hours from Lufkin, TX. Lufkin has an IHRA and NHRA 1/4 mile track.

Fort Bragg, NC has at least one 1/4 mile track and is in the heart of NASCAR country.

Fort Campbell, KY has a 1/8 mile track, but is very close to Bowling Green, KY.

Fort Stewart, GA had a 1/4 mile track and a long-closed Grand Prix track at Tybee Island. There's at least one road course that's available for public use.

Here's hoping that helped ya.

Not true for all AIT at FT Gordon, what is their MOS? I believe there are like 1 or 2 that may get vehicles because they are in training for a really long time. I was there for 22 weeks(25B) and have 2 soldiers(25U's, 20 weeks) that just graduated from there, no vehicles.

I was an MP, we didn't get any freedoms at all in AIT; then again this was 10 years ago and it may have changed. Welcome to the Army, good luck in Basic and AIT. Just do what you are told without asking questions and try not to draw attention to yourself.

Fort Sam is awesome, Fort Leonard Wood kinda sucks there is nothing around there. Fort Hood is alright I was stationed there for 3 years it's close to Austin and San Antonio is only 2 hours away. I didn't spend much time at Hood though it was pretty much a revolving door to Iraq

I am prior service and am currently attending 68P school. You will be in my CO. B-264 here at Ft Sam. For the first phase (black phase for iet) no you can not drive your car(it can be there but it won't move) and be prepared to get treated like SHIT. You will be able to drive about 5 weeks or so into your training. HMU when you get here(if I am still here) we can race :) Also your rank doesn't get you your choice of residency. It is your overall gpa in the course versus everyone else in the course(very competitive shit)

Well I plan on doing well in AIT I have seen some of my competition. And if it comes down to me getting to choose where I go for 6 months, I will stay pretty motivated.
When are you going to be done with your training there? Hope you are prepared to lose....
Do they pay to ship the car or will I be responsible for that?

Ok, one more question: Is it possible to store my car on base while I am in basic? Because I am pretty close to Ft. Wood now and I would rather save the $100 a month for storage if I can

Can it be outside or do you want it enclosed? The auto shop here at FLW has a fenced in area behind it where people store cars, boats, trailers, etc.. not sure about cost but it is much much cheaper than $100 a month. I think they have sheds too but not 100%.

I'm good friends with the guy that basically runs the place & he is a racer too, actually he is on this website. I'll ask him about rates if you're interested.

If you decide to go this route I live less than a mile from the auto shop, I wouldn't mind checking on your car for you whenever I'm up there.

Well I have two cars actually. Is it pretty safe there? Nobody messes with stuff? I'm sure cars survive months of deployments but it still just makes me nervous lol. If you could find out how much it is I would appreciate it. If I am even eligible to have my cars there considering I am just now joining. I appreciate it.

Seems to be pretty safe, there is a huge fence surrounding it and they lock the gate every night before going home. I left my car there for a couple of weeks with no issues.

You may have to show proof of military ID but I'll ask, I didn't but he knows I'm stationed here. Just know that after basic training you will not be able to do anything with your cars unless you can take them to your AIT, you will be headed to AIT the very next morning after graduating basic.

Your recruiter doesn't know the answer to that question, take everything he says with a grain of salt. :jest:

If it's prepaid you can store it there for $2 a day, that's coming from the manager, not a recruiter. :judge:

Now is that per car or per person? I have a firehawk and a trans am.
I don't actually have a military ID yet tho, just my orders and a future soldier ID card.

Your orders should work. I sent him a text about the car/person thing, I'll let you know.

If you go this route it's a good idea to designate someone who can pick up the cars if need be.. injuries, not being able to adjust to military life, failing final PT test, etc.. happen all of the time in basic and you may possibly be "held over" for months. Not saying any of this will happen to you but it's something to think about.

I am an ait plt sgt at ft Rucker. We allow soldiers to have there cars after they have been there for 77 days and obtained a certain phase status. They get this status by passing a apft, asu inspection, and a handful of other things. Really it depends on your units policy though.

I figured it was about 11 weeks. It's like phase 5+ right? And they won't pay for the first move of your car but after that they will pay to transport vehicle? But only one?

Mightymike, i want to do airborne but its too late to get it in my contract. And why do they need medical lab specialists to jump out of planes lol.
One day maybe.

ricks4genshianne

The Army will pay to move up to two of your POVs at their expense. After that, it's on you. The first move is on you, yes.

cobrakillincamaro

For our soldiers it is phase 5+. They will not pay to move your vehicle to ait. But they will pay to transport it from your house to your duty station. We are I'm the process of making it harder for our soldiers to get this phase status. One of the things were changing is we're gonna require 80 In each event on the pt test.

I'm at Leonard Wood too, permanent party though. It should get easier after white phase but you're OSUT so Idk how that works. Being an MP there is always a good chance you could be stationed here after training, hit me up on here if so.

I went through MP OSUT, it kinda sucked because we had the same Drill SGTS the whole way through and if you fucked up, you were there for that much longer. We didnt really get pass until gold phase, not that I really cared too much. That was back in 2002 though, shit may have changed

Ohh yea. It should get easier but im sure with the christmas leave they will throw some red phase back in. Ha. And will do. I've been around the base on clean up duty. The base is nice but seems small and forest like. So many Freakin trees haha. I don't mind the same ds's mine are pretty fair
