I would probably leave the oil pump alone as 01 cars aren't know for oil pump failures. Likewise with 84,000 miles on it even if the car was a 98 or 99 I'd leave it alone. Most of the cars with oil pump failure had less than 35,000 miles on them.

Many of the sponsors sell a ported oil pump I think ~$120 to $150 is typical. Local GM dealer sales a LS6 for ~$85

My Katech ported LS1 oil pump was $109 about 18 months ago.

Do a new o-ring at least, if you remove the pump for any reason.

You should change the oil pump on a 98 if you are going to be in there. They are around 100 bucks for an LS6 type. If you do a timing chain swap (and you should, so do a double roller set up, only around 80-90 bucks from various sponsors) you have to remove the oil pump to do it. The o-ring is on the oil pick up tube that extends down into the oil pan. This is a two dollar part from your local GM dealer that could save you having to pull apart the front of your engine again. There is a certain way it needs to be installed or else it gets pinched and you will lose oil pressure. Do a search on o-rings and you will find it. I did after my o-ring disaster. Good luck and have fun with the extra power.

Definitly should do an oil pump swap. Look at TSP for the ported LS6 oil pump, and the Rollermaster double timing set.
