Trick Flow / Polluter Package + 160k mile LS1??
Alright guys, need some advice. I am thinking about ordering the Trick Flow Heads/Cam package from Tick Performance http://www.tick-performance.com/cata...dy/valvetrain/ (about half way down). Now, I have a 98 Formula with 160k miles on it. I dont plan on spraying or anything like that, just want a little more *****. I plan on buying this kit, along with valve covers, oil pump, and timing chain. Obviously i'm going to need a stall. How long should I expect my stock bottom end to hold up? and should I reaplce anything else while I have the motor out? Just trying to get some advice, this is my first build and I want to make sure I dont miss anything. Any advice will help. Thanks!!

Thats alot of miles. Just depends on how you drive the car. If it was my car I would go ahead and put a forged bottom end with those miles so that you don't have to do things twice BUT some get away with it. Just make sure your tune is spot on. That will make a difference. good luck!

If you have taken care of the car and it's well maintained you would probably be okay. I would just hate that you spend all that money and install it and then something happens to the motor. Then you have to spend more and take it apart(labor costs suck) if your having it done and buy the parts again. The only reason I didn't replace my bottom end is because I only had 70k and if something happens I'm putting in a bigger cubed motor anyways

She's been well taken care of. Previous owner showed oil changes from the dealer every 3k miles with Royal Purple. He was an older guy. I plan on doing the work myself with some help from a buddy. So, no labor charges for me thankfully. I'm thinking of also buying this kit from summit.

and replacing everything except the pistons (i'm guessing those pistons in the kit wont work?). That way I know my bearing/gaskets are good to go.

i would spend the money more wisely, and youd have a better combination. if your planning on spending close to 3500, id say rebuild the bottom end...dont go with all brand new parts...id say pistons, bearings and rod bolts...upgrade! that would more than likely be cheaper than that head/cam package. then do a BUDGET heads/cam setup.
says your car is a 98-not the best to start with, but still ok. id try and find either some 243 heads (stock even...400 bucks) and a LS6 intake, and get a custom cam. i think youd have a way better setup. you wouldnt be at the 480rwhp...i would immagine around 410-440rwhp, but with a pretty much brand new engine, and a cam thats probably more streetable and suited to your needs.
i dont think i would go at throwing all those expensive parts at my engine with higher miles. more stress on all those parts down there...not to mention its a shitty day if something comes apart and ruins any of the new parts put on it...

So do you think if i still buy the setup i want, and the rebuild klit from summit, i'd be ok?

on a side note-ive talked to a few sponsers and such about rebuilds. cost is under 3000 for forged pistons and rods, and a few other upgrades. im betting you can go budget and possibly find a local (familiar with LSx engines and reputable) and do it for...maybe 2-2500...it would leave you a little extra money for other things...budget!

yep. don't make to much of hp #'s. They are for bragging and thats about it. My car was done with budget 2.5 heads and cam and car feels very strong. You don't have to get high end parts to make it a very quick street car.

i dont really mind high miles, but thats alot of cash to throw around, maybe even buying a lower mileage ls1 block would be cheap, i have seen some deals as of late, also if you keep your block for sure do rod bolts they suck in 98s, i would get a better cam, im not going to go into that topic, i try to talk everyone out of donkey cams unless they know what there getting into,if i where in your shoes i would be thinking budget truck block, lq9,lq4 imo its just a better way to go
