Default What cam should I get? experts chime in

I decided to go with a cam only setup, with aspirations for nice corresponding heads in the near future and nitrous. I'll try to be as specific and as detailed as possible. I know I can call aaron or matt and TSP but I thought I would document my conversation in a open forum for everyone else to read.

Mods installed are in my sig, and my initial goals would be 400 rwhp, but drivability is my limiting factor so this might be a farcry.

I'm not looking for a all out cam, but a very decent size cam that will work good with nitrous and a decent size set of heads when i get my hands on them. Nitrous will be a 150 shot, and my heads will either be trick flow heads or prc's if i wanna be a cheap *** lol. With that being said, I have a 25% UDP waiting to be installed along with the cam swap. FWIW i have stock 806 heads, and account for about 5 rwhp less than 241 heads from what i understand. Car has 30k miles and I have an excellent tuner at unlimited performance in corpus christi tx and will be dyno tuned.

Drivability is huge factor, so nothing in the 110-111 lsa area. I am happy with something in the 114 lsa, MAYBE 113 lsa if it would get me closer to my rwhp goals. I also plan on throwing in a 3000 stall, so something that compliments that, however a 3200 is also an alternative if need be. This is gonna be a street cam with limited visits to the track.

I'd like to stay away from custom grind cams for $$ reasons, but if thats what I need then please state alternative that are comparable.

Custom grinds aren't more expensive than off the shelf really. Your converter limitations are what is going to hurt you. Even a stock car would be better with a ~3600.

You are likely going to want to stay 228 and under with the converter, and from there your chances of 400rwhp cam only with an automatic are going to dwindle IMO.

(edited) yeah I know, I'll be happy with a 385'ish number tbh. I had a 3600 stall and i hated it.. thats why. A tsp torquer v2 could use a 3000 stall according to their website. http://www.texas-speed.com/p-1149-te...-camshaft.aspx

However, I have read up a vengeance vrx4 cam making close to 400 with similar mods and a vrx3 making 370-385 for a a4 w/ 2800 stall. Not bad for a baby cam imo. https://ls1tech.com/forums/dynamomet...no-inside.html

Just keep in mind the converter brand and STR number affects drivability more than its advertised stall rating.

I have a friend with a Vig 3200 that feels about identical to my Yank 3600. Another friend had a Vig 4000 and it sounded like a car with a slipping clutch everywhere he went...it was nuts on hills.

~385 is a more reasonable goal for sure

thats exactly what happened, it felt like i was in 1st gear everywhere i went LOL

With that being said, a streetable stall around the 3000-3200 area, I was thinking maybe a torquer v3 from tsp? or even be happy with the torquer v2?

What converter did you have?

Mine is nothing like that at all. Driving at light/part throttle one would be inclined to think it was a 2200-2500. It takes nearly half throttle to get over 3000rpm unless its low speed on a major steep hill. But a quick jab of the throttle will instantly put it around 3500rpm.

You can make your goals and have a fun car with less, point was just that not all "big" stalls are created equal. The bottom dollar junk converters are prime examples.

I can't remember, it came with the car when i bought it. It looked like a tci. I hear u on the 'they aren't created equal'. I was told to buy yank or circle D, I guess i had a bad experience with mine, and its the only car i drove that had anything bigger than a stock stall.

I would say that was likely the issue. If I were you before I dropped the $$$ on a new converter, I would find a couple cars to ride in with quality converters. If you still don't like it, at least you will know...no harm, no foul.

I understand you want to steer away from a custom cam, but honestly, it really is the only way to go.

I got mine from Ed Curtis. Get yours from whomever you want. My custom cam was 450. His off the shelf grinds are 450.

Cost me nothing to fill out a detailed sheet explaining what I wanted and what my goals were.

Just a thought.

Ditto. Had Ed custom spec me a cam as well. I ended up trading the cam and heads, but the guy who got them ended up putting down exactly what my goals was, which was 450rwhp. I would highly recommend Ed Curtis for a custom grind cam. What's a few extra bucks in the grand scheme of things when you know you're getting something custom made for your needs and goals.
