Default 5.3 in a 78 benz??

I just inherited my fathers 1978 mercedes benz 300cd. Being it a diesel car originally what would i need totake into account to drop in an ls engine. I was told and have researched the 5.3 truck engines to b the best choice (cost wise) but i wanted to go big with an ls3 or atleast an ls2.
My goal for the time being is 500 rwhp im not asking about chassis or suspensiOn. I can figurethat out myself im just stuck at the engine part. If there is anything else i left out that i should have included please let me know.

If the diesel runs... I think you'd be silly to pull it out. I'd walk over my mother for a classic diesel Benz. lol Enjoy it either way, though!

Turbo 5.3 will do 500 rwhp easy Google Hot Rod mags 5.3L Turbo you'll see. I personally witnessed a Full size 12 passenger GMC Savanna Van whoop all kinda *** in Vegas at the Strip raceway.
It was a daily driver running high 11's with 14lbs of boost on a stock internal 5.3, a father and son on board and Airport Shuttle brush painted down the side. Heavy and with the aerodynamics of a brick, trailering LS3 Vettes gotta love it.

I looked into swapping an LS motor into my uncles 1975 450SL. They have funky steering setups and make the swap near impossible running the factory stuff. If you cut off the front frame and weld on a Fatman or similar front end with rack and pinion steering the swap becomes possible. After reading that.... I passed on even beginning this conversion.
