I'm on my phone, otherwise I'd post about 10 of those drooling emoticons... VERY nice 2nd gen! Always have loved them. Owned a '79 Berlinetta & a '77 that was beautiful... Until it got hit by the mighty '95 hail storm in the Dallas Fort Worth area. I do miss those cars...
Would love to see some pics as well!

When I was a kid my dad and I built a '79 Z28. I'll have to find some pics. It was flat black, t-tops, 350 sbc, hurst dual gate shifter, 3.73 rear, Iroc style wheels on it. That was a fun car, but we sold it so I could by my first Camaro when I was 16, so not a total loss.

I will definitely need all the help I can get! I've been researching this for a short period of time so far & my head is starting to spin. There's soooo many things to figure out. After a few hours trying to learn about the LS engine family (LS1,2,3,6,7,9,LQ4,9,LY6,etc.) I think I am leaning toward just getting the GMPP LS3 E-Rod crate engine and a swap kit from Pace. Is this more expensive than buying the components individually? Ive not had enough time to ident all the parts and add up the collective cost to compare to the crate kit. Again, open to ideas/options.

I went with a gm crate motor because i am in the learning stages on the way these LS motors are put together. I just did a cam swap and changed the intake out to a carb style and went with the FAST EZ EFI. I use an MSD 6012 box to control timing and spark. I used the BMR conversion that came with motor mounts, trans mounts, and 1 7/8 coated long tube headers. Its a very simple set-up that self tunes and is very seamless. On paper my LS3 should be making 525-540 hp at the flywheel and idles like a stocker. And the best thing is , i dont have to know a thing about the electronics or tuning to enjoy all that LS power and drivablilty.

Wow, I could live with 500+ Hp!!! I called FAST & told them my plan to use an LS3 Erod crate (& use the oem intake), but wanted the FAST components to allow the ECU to automatically learn how to run the engine/setup. They said to use their EZ EFI & their XIM. This would allow me to chg anything (such as long tube headers) & the system would automatically learn how to run the new setup. However, he said I would have to manually program timing changes. Does your MSD 6012 handle this automatically? Why did you switch intakes? Thx for your help!
newschool72
01-03-2012, 04:16 PM
I went with the carb style intake because , to me , it just looks right on an older car. I went with the fast ez because i liked the self tuning aspect , because im an idiot when it comes to FI and electronics. The msd 6012 comes with some plug in chips that cover a wide range of spark advance. It also comes with the plug up gizmoes for tuning with a laptop. In the future i plan to get into that aspect of tuning, but not right now. It is nice to have that capability. 500+ hp is really nice, especially with a mild idle and a ton of vacuum.

When I was doing my LS install this past summer, I was having a difficult time coming up with headers, especially ones that would work with my Z-Bar and manual clutch. Lots of people had Gen 1 LS header applications, but not so many for Gen 2's. Might by why there aren't many cars posted here.

Ticks me off like you wouldn't believe!! When restoring my '73 I had so much trouble finding parts. 1st gens had infinitely more parts available by comparison. I don't get it, IMHO the 2nd gen is way better looking!!!
Anyway, I found that Classic Industries had the largest selection of 2nd gen parts than any other supplier. For this reason I give them my business FIRST!!

Yea, the first-gen is the darling of the aftermarket, but at least with the pro-touring movement good suspension parts are showing up for the second gen. I think we are right on the cusp of the second-gen getting the attention it deserves in the aftermarket. I hope anyway !

Yea, a brake company out of california used my car to build a disk brake system to fit the second gen. The crackheads thought the first and sec-gens used the same spindles ! They sent me their "SECOND GEN" 13" brake system and NO way would it work, so i had to send them my spindles to be modified to fit the brakes. I guess it all worked out in the end, though im still trying to figure out my pedal travel. Too much dead space at the top.

I visited Kooks web site, but could not find the 2nd gen headers. What is their price? I am still building a spreadsheet of the parts (& expenses) to put an LS3 & T56 in mine. Sheesh, looks like its gonna be big bucks so far! Gotta pay to play I guess.

I hadn't checked their site after I got my car back. I don't see them either. Not sure what the lag time is for them to get them on their site after they do a set of headers but it was back in July when they did mine.

It looks just like it does in the original post. I am doing a few more things to it right now, mostly interior wise. Wife bought me a stereo for christmas, so im installing it. problem was , i didnt want to put the front speakers in the doors or kick panels, so im building a console that will house the speakers. Im in the middle of installing new sideglass. Thought id finish the glass yesterday, but i had to order a new roller for the rear guide on the pass. side. I have a set of old SSM lift bars on the way for the rear. they should be here by weeks end. Here is a pic of the progress

Here's mine so far... It's getting a 5.3 Vortec out of a '00 Silverado with a t56, driveshaft, and rear end out an '01 NHRA edition T/A. It will also be getting a On3 Performance 76mm turbo and swapping out some of the lesser performance oriented truck parts for some better performing parts. I'm hoping for 650-ish hp. I'm ordering my engine harness and computer from PSI tomorrow sometime. Not sure on paint scheme yet...may just respray it with the same combo. It all sounds good except for the rear out of that TA. The 8.5 10 bolt under that car is twice the rearend you are talking about using. Just some friendly advice. 650hp will grenade the 01 7 5/8 10 bolt, but with good axles that 8.5 will live behind that turbo.

Well I'm not entirely sure what rear is in it. The only thing I'm certain of is that it has 4.11s. The guy I bought it from used it as a drag car, but I want to do more autoX and road racing and I want discs on the rear. I just figured swapping to the T/A rear is just as easy as doing a disc conversion and gear change. Maybe I'm wrong? I just knew the 3.42s and t56 worked well together and would work well for a turbo so why change a good thing? This is my first build like this so I'm still trying to figure everything out. It won't be getting the turbo right away. I'm hoping to get it driving by summer so I can have some fun with it then in the winter move onto the turbo swap. That way I should have no reason not to have it finished for summer and I can let my bank account recover some.
Anyways like I said this is my first build of this kind so any advice, suggestions, and help is very welcomed!

Not 100% clear on the question but i think you may be talking about the 70-73 standard frontend and the RS front for the same years. the RS has the blinkers next to the headlights, kind of giving it a quad headlight look. The standard frontend has the blinkers below the bumper. they are rectangular and turn up on the outside corners.

All 70-73 Standard Front ends look like this..
http://blog.hemmings.com/wp-content/uploads//2010/10/1970Camaro_01_700.jpg
The only thing that change over the year was that the 70-71 grille was a finer mesh then the 72/73 grille..(above pic is a 70/71)
This is a 72/73 Grille..

In most cases the 73 also had big bumper overriders..

The other front end you see on the cars is a the Rally Sport front end.. This front end did not change from 70-73..

What you see alot is people putting the RS Split bumpers on a standard front end and calling it an RS.. These people should be slapped.. :D IMO

Yea, but if you put the split bumpers on a standard front and call it a standard front w split bumperettes, its all good though, right? Because I really dont want to get slapped because i wanted the splits on mine. LOL

That is fine, but more time then not people try to tell me thier car is a RS.
Your fine with the Spilts everybody does it, just don't try to pass it off.
I love 2nd Gens, especially rubber bumpers(Sorry thats my Generation). I've owned 8 of them. My first being a 1970 bondo machine, I was sold on the spilt bumpers and the super rare "Corvette" 2 bolt 327, lol.
I wish I would have kept the 12 bolt that was under it but my dad made get of that "POS". That was 1991.
Here is my last 2nd Gen a 1979 in the ugliest original color ever painted on a Camaro ever, #41 Light Green. I miss this car.

It all sounds good except for the rear out of that TA. The 8.5 10 bolt under that car is twice the rearend you are talking about using. Just some friendly advice. 650hp will grenade the 01 7 5/8 10 bolt, but with good axles that 8.5 will live behind that turbo.
^^^ This man speaks the truth..
What about a Ford 9 in.?

I was just trying to install the stereo the wife got me for christmas and didnt want them in the doors or kickpanels, so i built the console to house the speakers and added stainless trim to a few things to tie it all together. had to have some tunes because this car is built for long hauls and the family runs out of things to talk about after a while.
The 9" is a great rearend with the right components. It will cost you a few more RWHP to turn than the 8.5 you already have though.

Plus, with good axles and a nice posi unit, you should be fine with the stock 8.5..

So would you both agree that my best bet is to just run the 8.5 and swap in some lower ratio gears like a 3.73 and do a disc conversion?

Cool. My decision is made then. I've read that 3rd gen F-body discs swap on easy to 10 and 12 bolt rears so I'm gonna go that route I guess.

Here is mine. I have had it since 1979. It was my street car till 1983 when I gutted it and turned it into a drag car till 1990 when I blew up the motor. Then it sat and collected mice till 2009. My kids got old enough and we decided to turn it back into a street car with updates. Finished it last spring. Now we decided its not fast enough so the motor is out for heads, cam, etc. and new wilwood brakes.

Its a ls1 out of a 2000 Camaro. The new cam is a Comp Cams 230/234 .592/.598 112lsa. The wheels are Forgelines 17 x 8 in front and 18 x 10 in the rear.

I think you will be making a good decision by keeping the 8.5 that's there. 3rd gen brakes do make a good swap, remember to swap to a 4 wheel disc master cylinder when you do. 4wd do require more volume to the calipers so, they are different. A unit for 79 TA 4wd should bolt right to the booster. Not sure on 80-81 they were smaller. (booster)

Yeah I think so too. I already have a booster out of a Roadmaster (I think) to use. I'm not sure exactly what it came out of as it's my Grandpa's and he's had it laying around for a while, but it is for front and rear disc brakes. And if that doesn't seem to work well then I'll steal the booster out of that same '01 T/A that I was taking everything else from. I'll figure something out. Plenty of salvage yards around me so I'll find something.

Ive been cruzing around the nastyz28.com site and alot of those guys say to weld the axle tubes on the 8.5 and have some pretty graffic photos of what can happen if you dont. I am in the process of changing my housing out because one of my tubes has rotated. just something to consider while the car is apart:confused:

Looks good even without paint, sounds nasty, and appears to be pretty quick. Good wheel choice, too. What's under the hood?
Off topic: For whatever reason, I like the half-finished, primer look on old iron. For instance, this http://pictures.topspeed.com/IMG/crop/200608/the-fast-and-the-fur-9_600x0w.jpg is just a menacing looking car. If I had a Monte of this year, I would build it just like this.

While I'm on this thread, I may as well update the changes in my build since I last posted. Welp, I've decided to change pretty much EVERYTHING!
Iron 5.3 out of '00 Silverado.
Ed Curtis ported 243 heads paired with an Ed Curtis custom grind cam.
TVS 2300- To do this, I'm going to swap out the whole truck accessory drive for the accessories off an '04 GTO Ls1. This will allow me to run the blower with a side-mounted jackshaft vs. the one that goes through the snout. I like the look much better and this way I won't be restricted on how I run my air intakes.
I plan to run this car on e85 at no more than 12 #s of boost, and hope to make somewhere around 700whp/tq. No matter the power I end up getting, it will be more than enough for my butt dyno. In my situation, however, less might actually be better than more as I didn't do a whole lot of strengthening to other crucial components. One thing that hasn't changed is my transmission. I'll be using an m12 T56 out of the same '04 GTO. These transmissions are said to hold 700hp. I'm sure that number was measured at the flywheel so I'm already flirting with that line. Plus, I'm doing this on an otherwise stock motor. No forged internals...just a cam and some ARP head studs.
Initially, I said I was going to run the driveshaft out of an '01 T/A, and modify it if need be, and the rear out of that same car. Then you guys told me to run the 8.5 already in it. My new solution is the IRS 8.8 out of an Explorer with its 3.73 gears, 31 spline axles, and disc brakes. Simple, strong, perfect for my application... I will also be getting a custom driveshaft built for it. Most likely a 3" from Driveshafts Unlimited local to me. I'd think about having DSS make it for me, but I don't trust my measurements enough for that, so I will just trailer the car to the local shop.
I have my motor. I have my heads. I have my transmission. I have the wiring harness from PSI Conversions. I need to go pick up my rear end and get that all mocked up so I can have the driveshaft made. Then, it's time to get the blower, cam, and fuel system (which I really haven't thought much about). Just waiting on the blower money to roll in... :eek2:
