Default Pics from Australia

Here are some pics from Australia. I thought many of you might be interested in. I have posted links, since most of the pics are 500K in size, if you aren't on broadband you might not want to view them.

346 with 8TB manifold in place. Note the long tubes for the 8TB manifold in the background. On this 346, the long runners were worth a ton of power. I will post a back to back graph as soon as I can scan it. This is the engine I posted a video to in my cam thread.

Picture of Sam (the owner) tuning a supercharged Holden on the Eddy Current dyno.

Picture of Peter (Plan B) and Mrs. J-Rod standing around the shop. You will note the cart that hold the laptop for tuning. They do not flash from the OBDII port. They flash directly to the computer. Sam lost one computer when the laptop was unplugged from power during the flash. They now have a UPS on the "Flash Cart", and have done 300+ tunes with no issues.

Picture of a Holden block. This is different from the GenI and GenII SBC. It looks somewhat like a Ford, and has 4 head bolts per cylinder. It is also a symetric port layout unlike previos gen SBC stuff.

Supercharged 5 liter Holden. Note the breadbox intake, and the big intake runners down there.

Here is a picture of the screen on the dyno. This shot shows the delta between the short runners and the long runners. You can see its really sizable. Blue lines are the short runner. Green lines are the longer runners.

This graph show the short pull we did overlaid with the other two. You can see the repeatability of the two graphs (the Yellow and the Blue graphs) done on differnet days. Again, you can see how the longer runners made more power across the entire range.

Sam has done a lot of testing in this arena. His statement to me was that in his testing runner statement was afffected most by rod length. On a motor with a good Rod to Stroke ratio the motor was much less affected by runner length as the cylinder had time during dwell at TDC and BDC for cylinder filling. In a motor with less ideal Rod to Stoke ratios the motor was extremely affected, and runner length became much more critical.

One of the Maifold that is soon to be released Harrop which allows for the runners to be laid out to the side, and will allow for you to tune length without much issue.

Shouldnt this be in external engine? Nice to see the pics J-Rod. Did you get to try your skills at a right hand driver?

I drove around alot. Missed out on drag racing as we had an emergency at work, and I had to leave the racetrack.

With the dyno graphs and the bare block pics I decided to put it in internal since much of hte information was based around cam selection. Some of the pics could go to external engine, and also dyno tuning.

Smile JROD. Greetings from Up-Top

Hey J-Rod,
Glad to see you made it back home in one piece.
Thanks for the nice wrap up and Pics of Sam's workshop. See now maybe you can agree that we ausies love our V8's and maybe we aren't as backward as many people think.

The week after you left i went out to the strip and did i personal best in my outrageously heavy holden. i think it is 1600 kilo's i ran a 13.25 @ 106mph.
That is just with an exhaust system, CAI & an MAFless tune by Sam, oops and almost forgot 3.73 diff gears. with normal street tyres.

It was nice meeting you on Peters boat and at the strip, look forward to catching up again some day.

Peter
