H/C first or gears?
Have some money saved up, so I'm deciding on what to do with it. I already have full bolt ons and light suspension mods.
I'm debating on what I should do, throw gears in now, or should I go H/C? Obviously big price difference, but I'm about 95% sure I want to do H/C in the future. But I've heard gears make such a difference that it may satisfy me.
My goal for the car is to be a weekend warrior/summer car and to be in the 11's hopefully. Basically I want it as fast as possible.
I have also heard that with the right H/C you should keep stock gears.
Any advice on what I should do? If I got gears I'd get 3.90's prob.
Oh and car is a 02 SS M6

It's all the other stuff the adds to the cost, labor, gaskets, tuning, exhaust, etc whereas the gears are a pretty basic upgrade and makes a huge difference. You can get a set of gears and good lsd for under $1000 and a good head cam package is going to run you double for sure for just the parts.
My old 5.0 fox body I had, I swapped the rear gears from 2.73 to 3.73 and made a full second difference at the track and felt huge on the street. The next mod was heads and a cam, headers, etc, and only brought me down another half a second in the quarter.....and cost five times as much to do.

if you dont want as much down time, build your car from the rear to the front... you break less **** that way...put h/c and your tranny or rear will go... build a tranny and you kill the rear.. build your rear and it outlasts tranny and motor in stock form.... most bang for your buck is a set of gears...4:10 will roll out hard... best mod for the money if you ask me...

Read the 3000 stall or 3.73s thread I started....I chose 3.73s (had 2.73s) and I'm completly satisfied...A H/C, now that I've got a chance to ride in one will hands down give you more power race wise..... Gears are fun comparably to the stock 2.73 I had...SOTP goes up dramaticly driving through town and it "feels" like I picked up a whole lotta performance...But an H/C is proven to give better performance gains than gears..

Im not sure.... generally 3:42 to 4:10s is a 20% increase (approx)... I cruise in my a4 at 80 mph at about 2500rpm.. so Id guess it would raise it about 500 rpm... A4s are a little more picky because their line pressure or shift points are pre tuned and dependant on you MAF... You would be changing it quite a bit and I dont know if you would have to get some sort of tune or reprogram so the tranny doesnt burn itself up... Im not tranny professional but I would PM 01redssa4, hes the tranny guru of tech... he could tell you for sure..

Thanks for the responses (minus the hijacker )
I guess a better question would
be, should I even get gears if I know I'll go H/C anyway? Won't be launching it a whole lot but if I got gears then AND H/C I'd still be on the stock rear end..
