Default reusing factory piston rings out of 1k motor

I bought a set of ls6 pistons and rods that came out of an ls6 from an 04 vette. They have around 1k on em. The guy removed em to forge the bottom en. The rods and pistons look smack brand new like they just came out the box. Now my question is would any of you reuse the piston rings for a budget build, or should i just buy new rings? Im gonna be puttin these pistons and rods in another low mileage ls6 block. The cross hatches on my block are clearly visible but ima hit it with the flex hone to break the glaze before reassemble. I also heard total seal sales some powder to aid in ring seal.

Use new. While I suppose its possible that they really have only 1,000 miles on them, and they probaby would mate well with a freshly honed bore, why chance it? For what new rings cost, you are a lot farther ahead than the time and money spent if you should have to tear it back apart to fix poor sealing rings.

Even if you know for a fact that the eight-year-old rings only have 1k on them (which is just very unlikely anyway) I would still go new.

i agree with hammertime, why take the time to put it all together to maybe have to pull it all back apart and spend more money

If your not gonna spray it I'd say slap em in. You did say BUDGET build right? If its anything like my budget it means tight.

Yes, completely worth the risk of having low compression, blow-by, etc to save a few bucks on piston rings. Be sure to reuse your head bolts too.

From a set of rings with 1k on them?? Yeah the smarter thing to do would be buy new rings, but IMO he would probably never know the difference if he reused them.

well i bought a new set of rings from a tech user....rather pay $70 bucks for new rings than to have to tear motor apart again

Use the rings... I've done it countless times with no issues. On a fresh build for a quality build replace. Or if they have high miles. I'm reusing some now that have 40K.

And I've even reused head bolts on my own Camaro. (now sold) That motor was flawless and issue free.

I've stuck the same rings/bearings/liners in a 500k engine numerous times. (diesels) I didnt agree with it, but had to do it. People would be pretty surprised with what you can get away with.

You can re use head bolts, up to three times. They are done when you see the threads stretch hence torque to yield, a ton of folks have done this including me. DOUbt if I would do it 3 times though(read it somewhere)

I would not re use rings unless I was putting them back in the same hole they came out of in the same block.

I have done what you want to do, cherry ball hone the cylinder and pop them in, but the odds are against you.

400 grit flex home is better as it is t near aggressive n gives good cross hatch for rings to seat properly
